A Word from the Pastor

July 28, 2023

Some of you were able to be a part of our Easter Vigil earlier this year. It was a glorious celebration with a full church and beautiful music. The diversity and inclusiveness of our community was evident in the bilingual liturgy. During this beautiful celebration, the community welcomed 14 people who were baptized (7 adults and 7 young children); and 9 previously baptized adults were received into full Communion with the Catholic Church. All of those adults plus another 21 adults received the Sacrament of Confirmation. For many of these people, they also received Holy Communion for the first time.

The celebration of these sacraments was the culmination of a process we call the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). These adults were prepared by two teams of parishioners (one Spanish, the other English) to be able to appreciate what it means to join a Catholic Christian community. The preparation extended from early fall until the Easter Vigil in April. The candidates met weekly with their respective team.

The preparation not only focused on understanding beliefs but also forming a Christian community. They learned how to pray and how to respond to the Lord’s invitation to friendship. The team members provided both instruction and personal witness of their own lives as disciples.

The process will begin again this September. A new group will form. Actually, there are two groups: the preparation in Spanish will take place on Tuesday evenings. The English group will meet on Sunday mornings. This is a change from our meeting date in the past. We will invite the English group to attend the 9:00 am Mass together and then stay for another hour of formation after the Mass.

I invite those who have not been baptized to consider if the Lord is calling you to draw closer to him and join his Church through the sacrament of Baptism. Those who were baptized in other Christian churches and now wish to become Catholic should also consider this invitation. The group will also welcome those adults who are already Catholic but did not receive the sacrament of Confirmation. All are welcome!

If you or your friends or family fall into one of these categories, now is the time to consider the Lord’s invitation. If you have a friend or loved one who fits this description, perhaps you could be the one who the Lord will use to invite them. We are also looking for additional team members and sponsors.

For those in the English group, you can sign up or seek further information by contacting our coordinators Brick and Rebecca Langford [email protected] or call me at the parish office.

On Not Locking Our Doors

This short piece by Fr. Ronald Rolheiser, OMI invites us to think about how we isolate ourselves in society these days. He uses the image locking our doors to illustrate how we retreat to our own corners and are not open to dialogue.

Gospel Reading

Matthew 13:44-52 (shorter form: Matthew 13:44-46)

Jesus teaches about the Kingdom of Heaven.

Background on the Gospel Reading

Today’s Gospel concludes three weeks of readings from the 13th Chapter of Matthew’s Gospel. Throughout these three weeks we have heard Jesus teaching crowds about the kingdom of heaven, and we have heard Jesus interpret some of his teachings for the disciples. In this week’s Gospel, Jesus offers three more short parables.

The first two parables describe the great value of the kingdom of heaven. In the first parable, Jesus says that the kingdom of heaven is like a buried treasure that is worth possessing even if it means giving up everything else. In the second parable, Jesus proposes that the kingdom of heaven is like a pearl of great worth for which one will sell everything else to possess. These parables teach us that we are to place everything we value in the service of the pursuit of the Kingdom of God.

The third parable that Jesus proposes in today’s Gospel is different from the first two, but it is reminiscent of the parable of the sower heard in last week’s Gospel. The kingdom of heaven is compared to fishing with a wide net. After the fish have been collected, the good fish are kept and the bad fish are thrown away; so too, in the final judgment, will the wicked and the righteous be separated.

Today’s Gospel concludes with a curious statement about the scribe who understands the kingdom of heaven. Here a metaphor is offered: this scribe is like the head of a household who “brings from his storeroom both the new and the old.” The scribes referred to here are experts of Mosaic law. It is possible that Jesus is here instructing the early Christian community on how to proceed in the interpretation of Jewish law with respect to Jesus’ “new” teaching. Jesus’ teaching about the kingdom of heaven does not replace the Jewish tradition; it interprets it in a different light.
