Black History Month Prayer Service
This morning, February 26th, Blessed Sacrament School held a prayer service honoring Black History Month and all African-Americans; including their contributions, achievements and advancements towards making a better world.

Prayer: In the name of the Father,
Let the presence of the Lord settle in our souls. May we feel Him in our hearts. Today, as we celebrate Black History Month, may we honor the legacy of all of them. They had the courage to pave the way for respect, dignity and justice in our world. Thank you Lord for diversity. May we come together as one for we are all one in Jesus Christ. -Mrs. Bost
The service was led by various students from 4th-8th grades and some of our teachers and staff. Mrs. Bost read from the book, Superheroes Are Everywhere written by Vice President Kamala Harris. Thank you to Mrs. Spradlin for singing!

Happy International STAND UP to Bullying Day!

This semi-annual event is observed by 25 countries across the globe — in workplaces, schools, and organizations.

  • 1 in 5 students report being bullied.
  • 1 in 5 tweens (9 to 12 years old) report they have been cyber-bullied, have cyber-bullied others, or have witnessed cyber-bullying.

Did you know? School-based bullying prevention programs decrease bullying up to 25%.

It is also a common misconception that bullying only happens between kids at school. In fact, 31% of Americans report being bullied as an adult.

  • 23.3% of employees have reported being bullied by aggressive emails
  • 20.2% of employees report negative gossip by coworkers
  • 17.8% of employees report being yelled at by others in the workplace

Here at Blessed Sacrament School we take very seriously any act of bullying and we remind parents that bullying is never tolerated. Together, we can make a better community! Go to our community announcements sections for more resources against bullying.

Knight's News
February is Black History Month!

To start each day, Mrs. Gomez is reading about African-American notable people.

Last Thursday, February 25th, students learned about Dr. Jane Cooke Wright (1919 - 2013). "Dr. Jane Wright analyzed a wide range of anti-cancer agents, explored the relationship between patient and tissue culture response, and developed new techniques for administering cancer chemotherapy. By 1967, she was the highest ranking African American woman in a United States medical institution.

Born in New York City in 1919, Jane Cooke Wright was the first of two daughters born to Corrine (Cooke) and Louis Tompkins Wright. Her father was one of the first African American graduates of Harvard Medical School, and he set a high standard for his daughters. Dr. Louis Wright was the first African American doctor appointed to a staff position at a municipal hospital in New York City and, in 1929, became the city's first African American police surgeon. He also established the Cancer Research Center at Harlem Hospital."
This morning, Friday 26th, students learned about Lloyd Hall ( ) who invented many ways for food preservation. "During his career he amassed 59 U.S. patents. Many food preservatives used today were pioneered by Dr. Hall's methods. Before his research, most preservation was done with salts and it was difficult to keep foods from spoiling without making them taste bitter. In 1932 he found a way to use a combination of salt with tiny crystals of sodium nitrate and nitrite that suppressed the nitrogen that spoiled food. This patented method of curing meats is still used today.

Hall also proved that some spices exposed food to microbes that sped up the process of food spoiling. This was contrary to beliefs at the time, which held that spices acted as food preservatives. To address this issue, Hall created a system to sterilize spices by using ethylene gas in a vacuum chamber that was later adapted by the food, drug, and cosmetic industries."-American Chemical Society
Third Grade Black History Month Work

Third Grade did great projects outside their hallway for Black History Month. The students were tasked to research a biography of an African-American notable person who made contributions to society. Take a look at some of the student's work!

Pi (π) Day

Many of our teachers are working to plan activities for our students on Pi Day. Since it is on a Sunday this year, we will celebrate on Monday, 3/15. We will post a schedule of events next week!

In yellow folders today, you will find a sheet with the first 300 digits of Pi. On Friday, March 12th, 3rd grade through 8th grade will have a "Pi Bee" to determine who knows the most digits of Pi. Each class winner will compete in a Pi Bee Championship on Monday, March 15th. Students are invited and encouraged to study these sheets!

Social Studies Projects: Discover China & the Middle Ages

This week, Mr. Champion's middles school students had two projects due and it looks like the students put a lot of effort into them!

Discover China Project

Students were tasked to research important events and inventions created by China and Chinese culture. Look at their work below:
Middle Ages Project

Students were were given 3 choices to do research on:
  • Create a Crusades Interactive Map
  • Research the technology/inventions used by the Vikings that helped them to dominate the Northern European region.
  • Research important people of the Middle-the students could choose from Charlemagne, Dante, John (King of England), Joan of Arc, Henry VI of England, Lief Erickson, or Marco Polo.

Below you can see their finished project and they are currently on display outside their classrooms.
Tuesday, March 2-Dr. Seuss Birthday

6th grade will read to all classes.

"Dr. Seuss’s birthday is celebrated on March 2 and it celebrates both the birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel and the National Education Association to endorse the importance of reading. A lesser-known fact about Dr. Seuss is that he created the word nerd. The first documented use of the word was in the 1950 book he wrote titled 'If I Ran the Zoo' about a boy named Gerald McGrew who visits a zoo and ponders what it would be like if he ran it. So In a way, Dr. Seuss is partly responsible for nerd culture. -nationaltoday.com
Scholastic Book Fair!

We are excited to announce that we will be hosting the Scholastic Book Fair this year. It will be held in person during the week of March 22nd. There will also be the option to purchase online! We will send out more information next week!
Dancing with Butterflies by Adrienne Barr

We are excited to announce that at 9:00 on March 12th, we will have a local author read her new children's book to our students. She will come to the school and read the book over a Google Meet. Afterwards, we will have a book signing station set up on the back deck. Order forms are attached here. Paper copies will go home next week.
Doughnuts for Jasleene

As you all know, the school is trying to find ways to help the Guido family. Jasleene returned to the hospital earlier this week. To help her parents cover their time away from work, we are partnering with Krispy Kreme!

We will be selling e-certificates for doughnuts! You will receive the certificate in your email and can present it to any Krispy Kreme location. You may also purchase and send these as gifts! They are $10 per dozen.

For every dozen sold, we will be able to donate $5 directly to the family.

Order forms will be in the yellow on Friday. Attached is a copy if you need to print more. We have never done this fundraiser before. Please forgive me if it takes a few days to get the certificates sent out. I will process them as quickly as possible!

If you wish to just donate to the family instead, you can send cash in an envelope marked "we love Jasleene". We will make sure the family receives it!

Let me know if you have any questions!

  1. If you or someone has been exposed and are being tested, please have your child stay home until the test results are returned.
  2. If you are asked to quarantine, please keep your child home.
  3. If you travel, socialize with people outside “your core” for long periods of time, please keep your child at home.

Not only is it unfair to the parents who are following policy but you are putting in danger the health of the other students and teachers/staff. Thank you for your cooperation so we can all avoid the virus and continue with in-person learning.
Transparencia:

Support BSS Retail Cards Sales!
What are Retail Cards? Retail cards are store certificates (plastic cards) that our school purchases at a discount and sells to you at face value for a school profit. The discount given is different with each vendor. BSS has used the profit money in the past for school technology and current needs of the school.

Why should you buy Retail Cards with BSS?
The profits from this program make up an important part of our fundraising budget. It is an easy and great way to help BSS earn fundraising dollars and not spend an extra dime. Everyone buys groceries and gas, and may occasionally eat out. Before your next trip to the gas station, grocery store, or restaurant, please consider purchasing Retail Cards with us.

Where can I buy these Retail Cards?
You may purchase the Retail Cards in the school office any day during school hours. CLICK HERE to access the order form.
Please make check payable to BSS HSA Scrip. Returned check fee is $35.
Thank you for participating in our school fundraiser.
