Executive Functioning for Middle School Students

Who are you? How do you learn? What is important to you? What goals do you have? How do you make decisions or respond to others’ decisions? These are just some of the questions your middle school child will explore during this school year.

Over the summer, middle school teachers did a two-day workshop on executive functioning. This includes skills such as working memory, flexible thinking, and self-control. We use these skills every day to learn, work, and manage our daily life. Executive functioning difficulties can make it hard to focus, follow directions and handle emotions, among other things. One of our roles as educators is to help your child develop these skills so they can be successful in all aspects of daily life.

Please read the following letter to see how BSS will help your child succeed this year: CLICK HERE to read the letter.

Our Class is a Family by 2nd Grade

"Teachers do so much more than just teach academics. They build a sense of community within their classrooms, creating a home away from home where they make their students feel safe, included, and loved.

With its heartfelt message and colorfully whimsical illustrations, 'Our Class is a Family' is a book that will help build and strengthen that class community. Kids learn that their classroom is a place where it's safe to be themselves, it's okay to make mistakes, and it's important to be a friend to others. When hearing this story being read aloud by their teacher, students are sure to feel like they are part of a special family.

And currently, during such an unprecedented time when many teachers and students are not physically in the classroom due to COVID-19 school closures, it's more important than it's ever been to give kids the message that their class is a family. Even at a distance, they still stick together.

'Family isn't always your relatives. It's the ones who accept you for who you are. The ones who would do anything to see you smile, and who love you no matter what.' -Unknown" -Goodreads.com

Last Friday, August 27th, Mrs. Bost's second-grade class read the book titled Our Class is a Family by Shannon Olsen and illustrated by Sandie Sonke. Mrs. Bost is looking forward to building a family with her second graders this year! Thank you for all you do for your students Mrs. Bost!
Ricky, the Rock Who Couldn't Roll

This morning, Friday, September 3rd, Mrs. Gomez read the book titled Ricky, the Rock Who Couldn't Roll, written by Jay Miletsky, and illustrated by Erin Wozniak, to our 2nd graders! This week, our second graders are learning about kindness and this book is perfect for it! Here is the synopsis by the publisher:

"Get ready to meet a new rock group! From zippy, little pebbles to big strong boulders, the rocks (and their ladybug friend) get together to play and roll around their favorite hill, only to find that one of their friends, Ricky, can't roll with them. Unlike all of the others, who are all round, Ricky can't roll because he's flat on one side. Determined not to leave their friend behind, the rocks and the ladybug set out to help Ricky roll around - one way or another."-Goodreads.com

The students will be painted kindness rocks in art class today!
Check Out Mrs. Bolen's 3rd Grade Class Website

We have a class website in third grade. This is the main place where students can get their assignments and information. Feel free to visit the website at:

Please know that only students logged in through their BSS accounts can access assignments. Parts of the website are still under construction and will frequently be updated throughout the year.
Also, our 3rd graders read this week a fictional story titled, Gloria Who Might Be My Best Friend written by Anne Cameron. "Julian didn't want a girl as a friend for fear of being laughed at, that is until he met Gloria."

A Message by Our Student Body President, Avery:

Our Student Body President, Avery, sent a message out to students earlier this week. She asked students to consider donating any old board games to the school. Students have been using the few games we have during indoor recess. We know some of the older students have also enjoyed playing card games! If you have games that aren't being played at home, we'd love to have them!

Students can bring these games to their homeroom teachers and they will be distributed to the appropriate age groups!

Makerspace Visit by Kindergarten!

On Tuesday, August 31st, our 6th-grade class took our Kindergarten students upstairs to visit the new makerspace! Kindergarten students had a tour of the space and the supplies that are available. They decided what they’d like to build the next time they visit.
All elementary classes will have the opportunity to buddy up with a middle school class each week! We look forward to seeing all of the things our students create in this new space!

Teacher's Spotlight
Each week, we will feature a teacher or staff member and they will share a little about themselves. This week, we will start with our business manager: Mr. Joe Charamut!
Mr. Charamut is the Business/Finance Manager for both the school and the parish. He served on the Parish Finance Council for 10 years, working closely with the school and parish bookkeepers and the parish business manager of the time. When they decided to retire, he decided that he could bring his experience working with non-profit organizations to Blessed Sacrament. Mr. Charamut started working for the school on January 9, 2013, and for both the school and the parish on March 4, 2013.

Before coming to Blessed Sacrament School, Mr. Charamut was a partner in a Certified Public Accounting firm in Chapel Hill, NC. There, he performed audits of Non-Profit Organizations, tax planning, and business consulting. He went to Central Connecticut State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting.

Mr. Charamut grew up in Newington, CT, and moved to North Carolina in 1994. He and his family moved to Mebane in 2001 and they currently live in Graham. He and his wife have been married for 30 years. Mr. Charamut has two daughters, a son, and two grandchildren. His granddaughter currently attends BSS!

Mr. Charamut is a sports fanatic who likes to play, coach, or just be a spectator; especially for golf and soccer.

From the Office of Advancement
Hi! Our 2021-2022 school year is off to a great start! If we haven't met yet, I am the Director of Advancement. My role at the school is fundraising, marketing, and event planning! You'll be hearing from me a lot throughout the year.

We have our first 2 fundraisers up and running! Look in your yellow folders for a flyer from Olive Garden and Attractions.

For our new families, here is some information you may find helpful:

Yellow Folders:
Yellow folders should come home every Friday. In these yellow folders, you will find your students completed classwork, homework, tests, and information about upcoming events. Yellow folders must be signed and returned on Monday.

Dress Down Days:
Typically there is one dress-down day a month. These days are on the school calendar. Most dress-down days have some sort of "payment". Usually donations for the food pantry. Please read the handbook for appropriate clothing/shoes on dress-down days. Students may also dress down on their birthdays!

Lunch/Recess:
To keep everyone safe, parents are not able to visit for lunch right now. If you would like to drop off lunch for your child, there is a table just outside the front door. Please ring the bell and let the front office know you dropped off food for your child. There should be a marker and paper on the table for you to put their name on it.

Birthday Snack:
If your child would like to celebrate their birthday at school, you can send in a snack. Please contact your teacher prior to your child's birthday to let them know you will be sending in a snack. They will let you know if there are any food allergies in your class.

Class Parties:
We do plan to have class holiday parties. Halloween will be the first one of the year. A sign-up will be sent out in early October or before.

Facebook:
The school's Facebook page is Blessed Sacrament School, Burlington. This is the only official page monitored by the school.

Please contact me with any questions!

Support BSS Retail Cards Sales!
What are Retail Cards? Retail cards are store certificates (plastic cards) that our school purchases at a discount and sells to you at face value for a school profit. The discount given is different with each vendor. BSS has used the profit money in the past for school technology and current needs of the school.

Why should you buy Retail Cards with BSS?
The profits from this program make up an important part of our fundraising budget. It is an easy and great way to help BSS earn fundraising dollars and not spend an extra dime. Everyone buys groceries and gas, and may occasionally eat out. Before your next trip to the gas station, grocery store, or restaurant, please consider purchasing Retail Cards with us.

Where can I buy these Retail Cards?
You may purchase the Retail Cards in the school office any day during school hours. CLICK HERE to access the order form.
Please make check payable to BSS HSA Scrip. Returned check fee is $35.
Thank you for participating in our school fundraiser.
Visit https:/www.scripzone.com for all participating vendors.
