The Lent Prayer Service

On Wednesday, February 17th we held our Lent Prayer Service and celebrated Ash Wednesday! Mrs. Kearney presided over the service and administered the ashes to some students and faculty. Mrs. Bost sprinkled ashes on the 1st and 2nd grade students. Special thanks to Mr. James LaChance for coming to play the piano and sing!
"Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent. Lent is a holy season celebrated by Catholics and Christians. We must prepare ourselves for the beginning of the Lenten season. We go to Mass on Ash Wednesday and the priest places ashes in the shape of a cross on our foreheads. Lent lasts for 40 days and 40 nights before Easter. During Lent we pray, give to those in need (almsgiving), and we ask God for forgiveness. We use this time to grow closer to Jesus."-taken from Mrs. Kearney's religion class worksheets. (**Mrs. Kearney/Mrs. Bost did not touch any of the students, they sprinkled ashes on their heads as per old Roman tradition.)

February is Black History Month!

To start each day, Mrs. Gomez is reading about African-American notable people.

Last Wednesday, the students learned about Bessie Coleman (1892 -1926), the first African-American woman and also the first of Native-American descent female pilot. She grew up in a cruel world of poverty and discrimination.

"When young Bessie first went to school at the age of six, it was to a one-room wooden shack, a four-mile walk from her home. Often there wasn't paper to write on or pencils to write with.

When Coleman turned 23 she headed to Chicago to live with two of her older brothers, hoping to make something of herself. But the Windy City offered little more to an African American woman than did Texas. When Coleman decided she wanted to learn to fly, the double stigma of her race and gender meant that she would have to travel to France to realize her dreams." -PBS.org
This morning, Friday 19th, the students learned about Joseph Lee (1849-1908)- the inventor of the Automatic Bread Crumber & the Bread-Making Machine!

"Joseph Lee was born in 1849, and lived most of his life in Boston, Massachusetts. His world was the food industry, and his glorious career in food service began when he was only a boy and worked in a bakery. Later, he would work as a waiter, a cook and a hotel manager.
Armed with hands-on experience, Joseph eventually began preparing, cooking and serving food. He was so successful that he opened two restaurants in the Boston area, then went on to own and manage the popular Woodland Park Hotel for 17 years.

Ever in love with the food industry, Joseph opened his own catering business called the Lee Catering Company in 1902. He divided his time between dazzling the members of the wealthy Boylston Street community with his dishes, and operating the Squantum Inn, a summer resort that specialized in seafood.

It was during the peak of his success as a Master Chef that Joseph got the idea for the bread crumbing machine. In his opinion, throwing out day-old bread was a waste, when it could instead be used to prepare foods. He had long felt that bread crumbs were superior to cracker crumbs, so he quickly began working on a device that automatically tore, crumbled and ground day-old bread into crumbs." -theblackhistorychannel.com

Doughnuts for Jasleene

As you all know, the school is trying to find ways to help the Guido family. Jasleene returned to the hospital earlier this week. To help her parents cover their time away from work, we are partnering with Krispy Kreme!

We will be selling e-certificates for doughnuts! You will receive the certificate in your email and can present it to any Krispy Kreme location. You may also purchase and send these as gifts! They are $10 per dozen.

For every dozen sold, we will be able to donate $5 directly to the family.

Order forms will be in the yellow on Friday. Attached is a copy if you need to print more. We have never done this fundraiser before. Please forgive me if it takes a few days to get the certificates sent out. I will process them as quickly as possible!

If you wish to just donate to the family instead, you can send cash in an envelope marked "we love Jasleene". We will make sure the family receives it!

Let me know if you have any questions!

Friendly reminder to all parents,

Thank you!

Queridos padres,

Porfavor, cuando dejen o levanten a sus hijos de la escuela, no maneje rapido. Hemos tenido quejas de nuestros vecinos que algunos de nuestros padres manejan muy rapido en horas ecolares en calles vecinas a la escuela.

Muchas gracias!

Picking up your child early?

If you are picking up your child before the end of the school day, please send a note to the office at [email protected] or your child’s homeroom teacher. Your child will be ready when you come to the door.

Recoge a su niñ@ temprano?

Si va a recoger a su hijo antes del final del día escolar, envíe una nota a la oficina a [email protected] o al maestro de su hijo. Su hijo estará listo cuando llegue a la puerta.
Transparency:
  1. If you or someone has been exposed and are being tested, please have your child stay home until the test results are returned.
  2. If you are asked to quarantine, please keep your child home.
  3. If you travel, socialize with people outside “your core” for long periods of time, please keep your child at home.

Not only is it unfair to the parents who are following policy but you are putting in danger the health of the other students and teachers/staff. Thank you for your cooperation so we can all avoid the virus and continue with in-person learning.
Transparencia:
  1. Si usted o alguien ha estado expuesto y está siendo examinado, haga que su hijo se quede en casa hasta que se devuelvan los resultados de la prueba.

Teacher's Spotlight
Since we are unable to do many activities inside the school where parents can meet and get to know Blessed Sacrament School's teachers or staff members, we are going to bring them to you through our Teacher's Spotlight Section here!

Each week, we will feature a teacher or staff member and they will share a little about themselves. This week, we will have our Spanish Teacher La Señora Graciela Schmitt!!
Here is a note from Señora Schmitt:

My name is Graciela Schmitt, or Señora Schmitt. I was born and raised in El Paso, Texas where my parents still reside. I have an Associates Degree in Education as well as a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies. I am the Spanish teacher for Pre-school to 8th grade. I have been teaching at BSS for 18 years, but have been part of the BSS family for 21 years. I left Blessed Sacrament for a year to go work for UNC-Greensboro, but my love for this school brought me back.

My husband and I raised our two children here in North Carolina. Both our children are BSS alumni, Catherine class of 2008 and George class of 2011. They both reside in New York City.

A couple of years ago, in the evenings, I worked for a Family Literacy Program in Guilford County that provides parents the opportunity to support their children’s literacy development while improving their own literacy skills. Most parents speak little to no English. This was very rewarding and I look forward to getting back to it.

In my spare time I like to go for a walk or a run, mostly walks. I am looking forward to getting back to the gym to do my Bootcamp. I’ve also started doing Yoga. I love watching football. When things normalize I will be visiting my children as often as possible.

Principal's Message
Dear Parents,

This week we began our Lenten journey. I challenged your children during this Lenten season to speak to each other with kindness because using positive words lifts the spirit of others. Encourage them to swap the negative to the positive. The power of positive words can make a difference in someone’s life.

Update on COVID-19

We have been doing a great job on keeping us healthy. In the past week, the numbers have started to spike, once again.

As there continues to be a spike of Covid-19 across the country, please be very conscientious to your vacation and holiday plans. Effective immediately, any families that travel to hot spot zones, uses airplanes as a mode of transportation, are out of school for more than 4 days due to vacation plans/family events, or find themselves in a large gathering event where social distancing/masks is minimal, then the student needs to have a COVID-19 test before returning back to school and these results must be presented to the school. We ask for your honesty and cooperation. BSS needs to keep ensuring the health and safety of the school community.

Support BSS Retail Cards Sales!
What are Retail Cards? Retail cards are store certificates (plastic cards) that our school purchases at a discount and sells to you at face value for a school profit. The discount given is different with each vendor. BSS has used the profit money in the past for school technology and current needs of the school.

Why should you buy Retail Cards with BSS?
The profits from this program make up an important part of our fundraising budget. It is an easy and great way to help BSS earn fundraising dollars and not spend an extra dime. Everyone buys groceries and gas, and may occasionally eat out. Before your next trip to the gas station, grocery store, or restaurant, please consider purchasing Retail Cards with us.

Where can I buy these Retail Cards?
You may purchase the Retail Cards in the school office any day during school hours. CLICK HERE to access the order form.
Please make check payable to BSS HSA Scrip. Returned check fee is $35.
Thank you for participating in our school fundraiser.
Visit https:/www.scripzone.com for all participating vendors.

Community Announcements
Tested, safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines will help us get back in control of our lives and back to the people and places we love.

A free COVID-19 vaccine will be available to all who want it, but supplies will be limited at first. We want to make sure people are vaccinated as quickly and fairly as possible, starting with people who are more likely to get COVID-19 and those more likely to get dangerously sick from it.

Use this tool to find your vaccine group.

This survey will not collect any private health information. There is an option at the end to enter contact information if you would like to be notified when you are eligible for vaccination.
