Black Health & Wellness: A Celebration of Black History Month!
What is Black History Month?

Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history.

Today, Black History Month is a time to honor the contributions and legacy of African Americans across U.S. history and society—from activists and civil rights pioneers such as Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Marcus Garvey, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and Rosa Parks to leaders in industry, politics, science, culture and more.

Did you know that since 1976, every American president has endorsed a specific theme for Black History Month?

This year's theme, “Black Health and Wellness,” explores "the legacy of not only Black scholars and medical practitioners in Western medicine, but also other ways of knowing (e.g., birthworkers, doulas, midwives, naturopaths, herbalists, etc.) throughout the African Diaspora.
8th Black History Wax Museum

This morning, Friday, February 11th, Mr. Champion's eight-grade students created a wax museum with portraits and backgrounds of famous African American leaders, inventors, artists, and athletes. We had figures like Barrack Obama, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., Frederick Douglas, and more represented. Parents and students were invited to come and take a look! Hi! As usual, we have a lot going on around the school! To help keep everyone informed, I wanted to share details about all of the Valentine's Day events!
NJHS Carnation Sale:

Our NJHS members have been collecting orders for their Carnation Sale! Students have been so sweet purchasing flowers for their parents, grandparents, and siblings. So far they have sold 100 flowers! They still have 150 available and would like to sell all of them! It's not too late to order. You can print the online form HERE. Any remaining flowers can be purchased for $5 on Friday. Students will walk around to homerooms and stand outside in the pickup line.

*NJHS will use all money earned towards refurbishing bathrooms around the school! They have requested to make this their special service for the year.*
NJHS students worked hard Thursday, February 23rd in the afternoon sorting their carnation orders! Thank you for your hard work!
Student Council Valentine's Raffle:

Last year, the Otero family secured a large donation of Valentine's Day stuffed animals for our school. Many students took the smaller ones home as summer reading buddies last year. We still have 4 very large stuffed animals that need a home! Students are invited to purchase raffle tickets for a chance to win one of these stuffed animals! Tickets are .25 each or 5 for $1. Winning tickets will be drawn at morning prayer on Monday, February 14th.

*Student Council will use all money earned towards their goal of repaving the parking lot and blacktops.*
Valentine's Day Parties:

Parties will be held on Monday the 14th. To keep our students safe, parties will only be for students and teachers. We hope to welcome parents again very soon!

Links to party sign-ups can be found HERE.

Little Knights Party-10:30
Parties around 2:00ish- no parents can join us for now.
If a child is giving out cards, it must be for every child in the class.
No personal valentine gifts exchange among students
Exchanging Valentine's Day Cards:

All students are invited to make cards with treats to give to their classmates and teachers. The school has purchased extra candy and cards for any students who need them. Please let me or homeroom teachers know if you'd like for your child to make their Valentine's at school with me. I plan to work with students during their recess time Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

I have created a spreadsheet with all student names by class. You can find those names HERE. Please use these lists when making cards for classmates.

Let me know if you have any questions!

8th-grade recognition

This past Saturday, February 5th, we played the final home game of the 2021-2022 basketball season. We also held a small recognition for our 8th-grade basketball players and cheerleaders! Congratulations on playing sports at BSS! Thank you parents and coaches for your time and commitment.
Two Elementary Track Coaches are Needed!
Grades K-4

This is a super fun way to get involved in BSS athletics! Track is the only competitive sport we have for elementary school kids and we are proud to be able to offer it!

Coaches must be available to practice after school 1-2 days per week (3-4:15) and Sunday afternoon at Williams track. Sunday practice will be a combined practice with the middle school team and coaches (provided we have access to the track).

Plan stations/ activities for grades K-4 to include broad jump, running races, and relays for practices.

Must be available to coach for the final PECCSA track meet on May 15 (tentative) at Bishop McGuiness High School in Kernersville.

We will have a meeting and provide training to all coaches prior to the start of the season so you are set up for success! The season begins the first week of March and ends at the PECCSA track meet.

Must be fully vaccinated to coach at BSS.

Masking during Basketball Games

This past weekend, the principals from the Diocese of Charlotte voted for optional masks during basketball games. BSS will continue to wear masks during practice, while on the bench, and while on the court. Any visiting team must adhere to our policy. Spectators will need to wear masks. After January, the mask policy will be revisited in the Diocese of Raleigh.

Este pasado fin de semana, los directores de la Diócesis de Charlotte votaron por máscaras opcionales durante el juego de baloncesto. BSS continuará usando máscaras durante la práctica, mientras esté en el banco y en la cancha. Cualquier equipo visitante debe adherirse a nuestra política. Los espectadores deberán usar máscaras. Después de enero, la política de máscaras se revisará en la Diócesis de Raleigh.

Reocurring Information for Parents
Swap Shop:

We will be adding a coat section to our Swap Shop! Children grow so fast it's hard to keep up with all of the things they need. We hope by adding gently used coats, it will help our parents save a little money and keep their children warm!

If you have coats you'd like to donate, please drop them off at the school!

We have children in sizes 2t-Adult 2XL.
Important BSS Reminders:

  • If it is sunny and the wind chill is not below freezing (we have guidelines), the children will go outside, especially during recess. Please make sure they are dressed appropriately for the weather.

  • If school is delayed/closed due to bad weather, you will receive a phone call by 6:05 am. through Option C. BSS does not follow the directives of the Alamance-Burlington School System. If there is no notification of closing or delay, parents should assume that we are open. However, we encourage all members of our community to use their best judgment when determining whether or not travel is safe and to proceed carefully.

  • While COVID vaccination is not required by BSS, we encourage all students to obtain a vaccination. Vaccinations help students avoid serious illness and the 10-day quarantine if exposed.

NCDHHS has updated the StrongSchools NC Toolkit isolation and quarantine guidance to align with updated guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which outlines what individuals should do if they contract or are exposed to COVID-19 to help slow the spread to others.

Blessed Sacrament School will adhere to the 10 days of isolation depending on the child’s vaccination status.

CLICK HERE to read the letter sent to parents.
