Our Lady of Guadalupe

Last Monday, December 12th, we held a prayer service in honor of our Lady of Guadalupe. CLICK HERE to see a video recording of the event. If you are not familiar with the story, it goes like this: "An elder Mexican man makes his way to Mass in the early morning twilight of December 9, 1531. He is a peasant, a simple farmer and laborer, and he has no education. Born under Aztec rule, he is a convert to Catholicism, and each step he takes this morning is a step into history. The morning quiet is broken by a strange music that he will later describe as the beautiful sound of birds. Diverting his path to investigate the sound, Juan Diego comes face to face with a radiant apparition of the Virgin Mary."

Our students were allowed to bring flowers to Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Christmas in South Africa

Mrs. Bost's second-grade class had a very special guest visit last Tuesday, December 13th! Mae’s mother, Emma Burress, came in to talk to the students about how she grew up celebrating Christmas in South Africa. She told them the biggest difference between Christmas in South Africa and Christmas in the U.S. is that it is summer in December in South Africa so it is very hot. Their favorite thing to do on Christmas Day was to go swimming in the pool. They opened their family presents on Christmas Eve and their gifts from "Father Christmas" on Christmas Day. Mrs. Burress also shared with the class that they celebrated Boxing Day on December 26th every year. This is a day to spend with family. She and her family almost always went to the beach. She told them that they call Santa, Father Christmas. He looks the same as Santa and he delivers presents just like Santa, he just has a different name. She shared ornaments from South Africa and pictures from when she was a little girl. Lastly, she shared a homemade treat that she always eats at Christmastime, mince pies. They were delicious! It was a fun visit and the students are so grateful to her for sharing her time and talents with them.
Cirque du Canines - Tuesday, December 20th

Tuesday, 12/20-Dresswear-Christmas Best or Worst
11:30 Dismissal and no afterschool

We are excited that Marilyn and her canines will be doing a special performance for our students! She will also perform that night at the Paramount. Based on the logistics, it will take place at the Knight Castle (400 W Davis St, Burlington, NC) at 9:00 AM.

K-8 will walk at 8:30 to the castle.

Little Knights- After speaking with Mrs. Glenn and Ms. Asmar, we have come up with these options so your child may attend.

  1. Bring your child to school at regular time (you may wait in the multipurpose room) and have an adult walk with your child to the Knight Castle at 8:20. It has to be one-to-one and an adult. You are welcome to stay for the performance.
  2. Drive your child to the Knight Castle by 8:30. You are welcome to stay for the performance.
  3. If Option 1 or 2 do not work, your child will need to stay home.
  4. If your child does not come to school on Tuesdays, your child and you are welcome to attend.
Mrs. & Mr. Kennedy are expecting!

Last Monday, December 12th, Mrs. Kennedy, our 4th-grade teacher, announced that she is expecting a baby! She will be due in June 2023. We wish the family the best and pray that she delivers a healthy baby. Mia, our preschool student, is excited to become a big sister!

Congratulations Kennedy Family!

Athletic Booster Club: Shoe Fundraiser!

The Athletic Boosters Club has officially kicked off the 2022 Blessed Sacrament Shoe drive with funds2orgs.
How the fundraiser works:
BSS students and families will collect gently worn, used and new shoes for the next 60 days. These shoes are bagged and then collected by the fundraising company. Funds2Org then pays BSS per pound for the shoes. These shoes are shipped to micro-enterprises around the world
What is our School Goal?
100 bags (2,500 shoes) – Collecting 100 bags will raise approximately $1,000.
After 100 bags our cost per pound we receive increases, increasing our earnings even more. There is NO LIMIT to the number of shoes we collect
How you can collect and donate:
  • Check your home for any shoes no longer being worn or no longer fit.
  • Ask all your neighbors, friends, and families to check their closets. Most people have several pairs of shoes that are no longer being worn.
  • Re-share future Blessed Sacrament Social Media Posts about the fundraiser. Share to any neighborhood or club pages you are members of. Spread the word!
  • There will be a collection box at the Blessed Sacrament School and Blessed Sacrament Church.
  • The fundraiser continues until mid-January, so be sure to collect at your holiday gatherings!
Contact Holly Groh with any fundraising questions you may have:

Introducing Mrs. Kelly Spradlin!

Mrs. Spradlin is our music teacher and puts together our Christmas Concert & Spring Sing each year with Mrs. Davis. She became a part of the BSS family in 2015. She shares with us: “I love BSS. I knew the minute I first arrived that it was a special place, and I wanted to be a part of what was happening there. It’s more than just a school, it’s a family. I love those kids like they are my own. The relationships we make when we study and learn together are special. This is what makes being a teacher, not just a job, but a calling. I love talking to them, watching them discover their unique gifts and talents, and enjoy trying to figure out how to bring out the best in them. I love celebrating with them when they have success, and also supporting them and encouraging them when they don't.”

Mrs. Spradlin teaches 3rd-8th Grade Music and 7th Grade Social Studies. She is also Co-Coach of the Competition Cheer Team.

Mrs. Spradlin earned her Bachelor’s degree in Vocal Performance from Clayton State University. She has held professional memberships in the North Carolina Music Educators Association, the National Association of Teachers of Singing, the American Choral Directors Association, and the local chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota.

Cheer Update

Congratulations to all of those students that made the 2022-2023 Competition Cheer Team!

If your family decides to accept the position on the cheer team the following commitments are required:

  • Cheer Expo @ Williams High School - Saturday, January 14, 2023
  • Shamrock Tournament @ Charlotte Catholic High School February 17-19, 2023
  • New Year Cheer Classic @ Immaculata Catholic School in Durham, NC on Saturday, January 21st, 2023
  • Practices on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-5:00 in the Knight Castle. Because there are many BSS activities, our intention is to give you a calendar with specific practice dates that work around school events ASAP. We ask that you be flexible around competition time as we might need to add extra practice if we are struggling with a particular skill or part of the routine.
  • We would like each girl to bring a change of clothes, sturdy shoes, a water bottle, and a yoga mat (to be kept at school) to practice. If you don’t have a yoga mat it can be purchased at Five Below or Walmart for $5-$10.

I am sure other questions will arise as we move forward, Please feel free to reach out to us with any questions or concerns.
