Hispanic Heritage Month
"Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.

The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period."-https://www.hispanicheritagemonth.gov/about/
Each morning, last week, Mrs. Gomez started the day by sharing with the students about an influential Hispanic person who has made great contributions to our world. Some of these influential people Mrs. Gomez shared about were the Queen of Salsa Celia Cruz and an American actor, singer, songwriter, rapper, producer, and playwright Lin-Manuel Miranda who created the Broadway musicals In the Heights and Hamilton.

Outdoors Mass

After two years of not being able to have Mass together, we have held our first outdoor mass of the school year, and what a blessing it was! Thank you to Mrs. Kearney, Mrs. Spradlin, Mr. Quinn, Father Paul, and all of our students who took a part in singing and playing an instrument at the service!

Fr. Paul talked to our students about the story of Jesus and Beelzebul & The Return of the Unclean Spirit, Gospel of Luke 14:26. He shared with our students, "If people don't pay attention about what they are doing in life, they tend to make all sorts of mistakes; and when you make one mistake, it's easier to make a second one. Think about the last time you told a lie to your parents. You lie to them once, you say 'I didn't do that.' or you tell a teacher or Mrs. Gomez, 'I didn't push him/her'...it was difficult the first time, but the second or third time it's not so hard to say it.-that's what happened to the people of Israel-they kept telling lies to themselves...eventually, they created a situation that caused them pain and suffering. "-Fr. Paul

CLICK HERE to watch the video of the service.
Towards the end of the service, Fr. Paul asked two very bright eight-grade students who responded correctly to some of his questions and offered them a choice-donuts or pizza for the whole school?---they chose pizza!!

Thank you Fr. Paul for a wonderful celebration of Mass outdoors and we all wish you a Happy Birthday!!
Iowa Assessments

Our students did a wonderful job taking the Iowa & CogAT Assessments this week! Teachers will utilize results data to guide instructional decisions that best support students’ learning. Additionally, Iowa Assessment results will show parents how their student is performing in comparison to other students at the same grade levels nationally. The CogAT is an assessment intended to estimate students' learned reasoning and problem-solving abilities.

Boxitects STEM Project by 2nd Grade

This Summer, our rising 2nd-grade students were tasked with reading Boxitects, written by Kim Smith, which is a STEAM-centered, adorably illustrated picture book about Meg, a brilliant and creative boxitect who creates extraordinary things out of ordinary cardboard boxes. -kimillustration.com

With the help of our 5th-grade class, Mrs. Bost's 2nd-grade students had a lot of fun creating their own boxitects projects. We had a knight with his tall tower, a fish bowl, candy stores, a school-cookies store-and doctor's office building, a fox and his burrow, robots, a race track, and even a dragon! The students were working in pairs and paired with a couple of 5th graders to create, present and then answer questions about their creations to the class and to our Science Teacher, Mrs. Tichy! Great job Knights for your creativity, critical thinking, and ingenuity in putting together your projects!

Teacher's Spotlight
Since we are unable to do many activities inside the school where parents can meet and get to know Blessed Sacrament School Community's teachers or staff members, we are going to bring them to you through our Teacher's Spotlight Section here!

Each week, we will feature a teacher or staff member and they will share a little about themselves. This week, we will have Mr. James Lachance!!
The picture above is of Mr. Lacanche and his dad.
Mr. James Lachance is the Director of Music & Liturgy for Blessed Sacrament Church. He helps Blessed Sacrament School with playing the piano or singing whenever we have prayer services. Prior to taking the job in Burlington, he served as Music Director for Catholic Services at Bryant University, Smithfield, RI, and Co-Director of Music and Liturgy at Mary Mother of Mankind, North Providence, RI where he planned music for masses and special liturgy, played for funerals and weddings and directed the young adult choir.

Mr. Lachance earned a Bachelor of Music History degree from Rhode Island College where he majored in voice with concentrated studies in Organ. He is an inducted member of the National Society of Leadership and Success, RI Chapter, and currently a member of the Knights of Columbus. James mentored young students at the Henry Barnard Laboratory School during his time on the RIC Campus. He also earned an Associate Degree in Business Management.

James is the oldest of four children of Diana and Philip Lachance of Cranston, RI. He began his studies in music at the young age of 7 years old with his grandmother and mentor, Evelyn Montanaro, formerly of the Washington National Symphony. In addition to piano and organ James also plays the trumpet. James is an avid tennis player rated 4.0 by USTA. James enjoys serving the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Community as the music director planning for weekend masses, special liturgies, directing choirs, assisting with the development of music in the school, and providing music at weddings and funerals.

Support BSS Retail Cards Sales!
What are Retail Cards? Retail cards are store certificates (plastic cards) that our school purchases at a discount and sells to you at face value for a school profit. The discount given is different with each vendor. BSS has used the profit money in the past for school technology and current needs of the school.

Why should you buy Retail Cards with BSS?
The profits from this program make up an important part of our fundraising budget. It is an easy and great way to help BSS earn fundraising dollars and not spend an extra dime. Everyone buys groceries and gas, and may occasionally eat out. Before your next trip to the gas station, grocery store, or restaurant, please consider purchasing Retail Cards with us.

Where can I buy these Retail Cards?
You may purchase the Retail Cards in the school office any day during school hours. CLICK HERE to access the order form.
Please make check payable to BSS HSA Scrip. Returned check fee is $35.
Thank you for participating in our school fundraiser.
Visit https:/www.scripzone.com for all participating vendors.
