School Mass - St. Cecilia - Farewell Fr. Piotr! | |
This morning, Friday, November 22nd, 2024, we celebrated mass with Fr. Piotr. Today Fr. Piotr wore a red regalia and explained to our students that he wears red whenever symbolizing the blood of martyrs, the burning love of the Holy Spirit, and the birth of the Church. Today, because of a martyr, we are celebrating St. Cecilia, "Virgin and Martyr in the Cemetery of Callistus. History and legend intertwine around the figure of Saint Cecilia, a virgin and martyr, who lived in Rome between the 2nd and 3rd centuries. She is celebrated around the world as a patron of music, musicians, and singers." -vaticannews.va
We want to give a special thanks to Mrs. Kennedy, Mr. Cancro & Mrs. Lee for preparing our students to read the scriptures, lead us in prayer, and sing during mass. The students did a great job! ๐๐

Farewell Fr. Piotr!
Right after mass, Mrs. Gomez announced that Fr. Piotr is being moved to another assignment and will leave our faith community right after Christmas. Fr. Piotr shared with us that his new assignment will be in Rome!
We will miss you Fr. Piotr! Thank you for sharing many lessons with us these past three years!

Farewell Willie Brown!
Our Willie Brown, beloved former custodian of BSS, a gentle giant, has passed away. He had a heart of gold, and his laughter brought smiles to each of the students, teachers, and parents every day. We will always remember his kindness, his morning car greetings, and love for Carolina! Who could forget โMr. Brown Dayโ or apples, peaches, pumpkin pie! Even to this day, we say, โGo to Mr. Brownโs room, located at the main campus. We pray for his wife, Sherry, and his children, Ginger, Lisa, and his son Kim during this time. There are no goodbyes for you, Mr. Brown, you will always be in our hearts.

This week, our Little Knight students have been working on creating their Thankful Turkeys! Their work is currently on display just outside their classrooms.

Kindergarten - What Are You Thankful for?
Both of our Kindergarten classes have also been working on making turkeys. Students were asked to write what they were thankful for. Family and friends were a typical answer. They also worked on disguising their turkeys so they do not eat them on Thanksgiving-we have some pretty creative drawings there! Their work is currently on display just outside of their classrooms.

5th Graders Lead the Charge in Promoting a Growth Mindset School Culture
The 5th Grade Language Arts students have taken the initiative to foster a growth mindset culture across the school through a hands-on, research-based project that is inspiring younger students to embrace challenges and see failures as opportunities for growth.
The project began with an in-depth exploration of the concept of a growth mindset versus a fixed mindset. Students read articles, conducted research, and participated in discussions to understand how adopting a growth mindset can lead to greater resilience, motivation, and success. Armed with this knowledge, they turned their focus to answering a critical question: โHow can we create a school culture where students have a growth mindset instead of a fixed mindset?โ To tackle this question, the 5th graders designed and surveyed elementary students in grades 1 through 4. After analyzing the responses, they gained valuable insights into their peersโ attitudes toward learning, challenges, and failure. These findings became the foundation for an engaging lesson plan tailored to their younger peers.
In their lessons, the 5th graders taught strategies to develop a growth mindset, such as using positive self-talk, embracing challenges, and learning from mistakes. Through interactive activities, stories, and discussions, they encouraged 1st through 4th-grade students to reframe their thinking and see the value in perseverance and effort.
Our 5th graders not only gained a deeper understanding of the growth mindset themselves but also became role models for our younger students. Their work is a shining example of how empowering students to take the lead can create meaningful change in our school community. ๐๐

Veterans Visit 1st Grade
On Thursday, November 21st, Veterans from Alamance County visited our first-grade class. They talked to our students about what our flag means, how to care for and fold it, and the history and meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem. Did you know that the first star of the 3rd row, from left to right, represents North Carolina? After their presentation, the Veterans gave our students a quiz and gave them all their own American Flags. Thank you for your service, Veterans!
