From the Head of School
Parent Partnership and Sphere Sovereignty

Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. – Ephesians 6:4

The concept of parent partnership is deeply rooted in the DNA of TKCS. It is a key phrase in our mission statement and a core value flowing out of a philosophical commitment that the primary responsibility for raising children belongs to parents.

Back in December, the TKCS faculty had discussions about respecting the parent's role. One statement we considered was: "Make the most of our time with students and work in partnership with parents to support each family's goals." We also considered Abraham Kuyper (a Dutch theologian who rose to the role of Prime Minister in the Netherlands from 1901–1905) and his concept of "sphere sovereignty." He used this term to teach that all authority belongs to God, who delegates authority to various spheres of life: the individual, family, church, private institutions, and government. An application of this concept would be that educators are the experts in matters of pedagogy, curriculum, assessments, and education practice. However, parents should be viewed as the authority for character development and spiritual formation. Parents should speak into educational issues and teachers should communicate their insights about character, behavior and spiritual growth to parents, but parents are the final human authorities in the education of their children.

Recognizing these different spheres of responsibility strengthens our partnership with parents and ultimately enables King's to be a more effective school.
