Message from the Principal

Steve Garland

The world of schools - if anything - are whirlwinds of activity. We had only been back a matter of days in that first week of September when I remarked to another faculty member that our students and teachers appeared as though they were humming along in mid-term form.  It was truly a great start.  Eight weeks later... that is exactly where we now find ourselves.  Although a wee bit shocking to think that next week marks the half-way point of our first term of studies... it is precisely because SO many amazing things happen...

Message from the President

Neysa Finnie
A few years ago around Christmas there was a series of commercials on television. You know the kind - the ones that tug at your heart strings, make you long for a peaceful, less stressful time surrounded by loved ones or ones that call you to action to help others. On these particular commercials, after a series of thought provoking images and a few spoken words, when the message on comes up that all these good works people are doing around the world, their connection and companionship together and the peace and joy...

Athletics Round-up

AthleticsGiving News

The Athletics Department and, in particular, the volleyball program, is very grateful for the generous gift made recently by an alumni donor to the program. Through this donation, we were able to install two roster boards in the gym and purchase custom-made team jackets for our three volleyball teams, which will be used for years to come. It always means so much when alumni give back to STMC.

In Athletics, our coaches and student-athletes work so hard that any gift towards supporting our athletic programs highly encourages them to perform at their best and makes them feel even more proud to be part of STMC. We are blown away by the generosity and dedication by our STMC community.  We feel truly blessed with this gift because it has brought attention and a feeling of appreciation to our athletes and coaching staff. Thank you so very much!

The Grade 8 Football Team has played three games this month, coming short against Notre Dame and Vancouver College and beating Seaquam 19 to 6. The Grade 8 Team play each Tuesday afternoon, and have 3 games scheduled in November.

The Junior Varsity Football Team continued their near spotless season in games against Moat (40 - 0), NWSS (8-14), and Centennial (29-0) in October. Looking forward, the JV team plays every Thursday in November with 4 games scheduled.

The Varsity Football Team started the month of October on a very bittersweet note. The players had to cope with the very significant loss of their mentor, coach and friend in the passing of Coach Kully. It was a very challenging week which culminated with the players upsetting the # 1 ranked football team in the province at the time, Terry Fox (15 - 8) on Friday, October 6th.  It was a very memorable performance, and the spirit of Coach Kully was palpable throughout the game. The team played their hearts out for him on that evening.  That victory was followed by an encore performance the following week as the team beat a very good opponent in Lord Tweedsmuir (24 - 19).  The team then had their longest road trip of the season traveling to Kelowna where they beat Mount Boucherie (49 - 0).  The month of October concluded with a very convincing win on Seniors night over W.J. Mouat (58 - 0).  The team has one more regular season game remaining and as a result of finishing first in the Eastern Conference will have a bye straight in to the quarter finals.  It would be great to have a lot of fan support going into the playoffs!

October saw the Varsity Volleyball Team maintain their winning streak as they went undefeated against St. Pat's, Notre Dame, York House, Little Flower Academy, and West Point Grey Academy. The team finished their regular season campaign first in the league, with only a single set lost. To cap October off, the team became the BC Provincial Catholic varsity volleyball champions! Now the Knights face the toughest part of the year: post-season. League playoffs run November 1-9, with STMC hosting all league finals (grade 8, junior, & senior) on November 9. Lower Mainlands and the BC Provincial championships end off the season. Best of luck to the Varsity Knights in playoffs!

The Junior Varsity Volleyball Team has also had a successful month of competition, placing firth at a tournament held at Vancouver Island University, and second at a tournament held at Riverside. The team currently sits second in the league and their goal this month is to make it to provincials, good luck Knights!

STM C Athlete Spotlight:

Emma March, an STMC grade 10 student played for Canada Baseball U21 Prospect team this August during the National Senior Women's Baseball tournament in Windsor, Ontario. Emma pitched and played second base, and was the youngest player chosen by the National Senior Women's Baseball Coaches to represent Canada in Washington, DC in a friendly series against team USA later that month. The series was held at the Washington Nationals Training facility.

The 15 year old second baseman hit for a triple in the 5th inning while Canada was down 6-0, knocking in a teammate to get the first run for Canada and starting a seven run rally to lead Team Canada to a 13-7 win over Team USA in the first game of the series. Emma batted over .418 in the series as the Canadian National Women's team split the 7 games with the American women 3:3:1.  Emma will attend the Women's Canadian National Program camp this February in Havana, Cuba with the Cuban National team in preparation for next year's World Cup.

We love to share the success of our students. To have your son or daughter's story highlighted, please contact [email protected]

21 students in Grades 10 - 12 are set to compete in  the Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC), Canada's premier national mathematics competition. The purpose of the COMC is to encourage students to explore, discover, and learn more about mathematics and problem solving.

This competition will give STMC students an opportunity to advance onto the Canadian Mathematical Olympiad and a chance to be selected as part of Math Team Canada.

All of our Grade 8 students as well as select Grade 9 and 10 students will be writing the Beaver Computing Challenge published by the University of Waterloo.  This contest focuses on the mathematics needed for computer science and is happening mid November during mathematics classes. Grade 11 and 12 Students Trip to Bamfield Marine Science Centre
Write up by student Vanessa Rizzo

In the fall of 2017, I along with 20 other STMC students had the opportunity to travel to Vancouver Island and visit the Bamfield Marine Science Centre. Throughout the duration of the trip, we listened to lectures, preformed labs, and attained a variety of field experience regarding marine biology. The students at Bamfield were able to listen to lectures held by the staff to supplement their knowledge of aquatic life. While the lectures were fascinating the part of the trip that I found most valuable was being able to experience all of the ocean species in their natural habitat. One example of this was when the group went to the Brady's Beach and got to observe the diversity of the ocean species that lived along the beach. Being able to learn about these species in a classroom may be very interesting to learn about, however, it is nowhere near as captivating when witnessed in nature.

We also participated in a series of labs throughout the trip. The labs ranged from exploring and writing down information on various marine species, to collecting plankton, to taking samples of DNA and sending them to an international data base. These labs were extremely beneficial because not only did it present the information we were learning in a different fashion, but it also helped us to gain scientific experience. One example of this was a new lab taking place at the science centre which gave us the opportunity to sample the DNA of a marine species and send it to an international data base. After the data had been entered, our names would appear next to the information we had collected and be used by scientists for their research. This provided us the experience of taking lab-grade photos of our organisms as well as trying to find information about them. Another activity that helped us to gain experience was the staff teaching us about the jobs they preform while at the facility. For example, the staff took us out on the water to test its temperature and salinity, which they have to preform on a daily basis.

Overall, if given to the opportunity I wouldn't hesitate to go back to on the Bamfield trip again due to all of the fun I had there thanks to group of students I went there with, our chaperones, and the Bamfield staff.

- Vanessa Rizzo

Knights Christmas Market

Our Knights Christmas Market is fast approaching - November 18 & 19, 2017
Volunteers Needed: We still need lots of volunteers! It's easy - just sign up for "Parents for Knights Christmas Market" here: Or you can email us at [email protected]. We could really use your help in the following areas:
  • PARKING: We are still looking for a parent volunteer to take on parking. This involves organizing and overseeing all the student volunteers that assist the vendors and public in parking on Saturday and Sunday.
  • BAKE SALE: We need school parents to contribute baking for the Bake Sale - cookies, bars, cakes and loaves are all popular!

  • BISTRO: Come and enjoy a day filled with happiness and Christmas cheer. Volunteers are needed on both the Saturday and Sunday. Please help us be successful.
Our book sale is a very popular part of the Knights Christmas Market but we need more books! Books that sell well are good novels (fiction or non-fiction), cookbooks, home repair or craft books and children's books. Spiritual, biography, sports, music and other book topics are also welcome. Please do not donate text books, encyclopedia sets or magazines.

Parents, alumni, staff and students can drop off their book donations between 2:00 pm and 3:30 pm in the multi-purpose storage room upstairs (above the gym).  There will be some tables and boxes inside ready for your donations.

Please contact Susanne Bell at [email protected] i f you have a large donation or require more details. Please put "For Susanne - Book Drive" in the email subject line

Walkathon Day this year took a slightly different turn with some necessary adjustments made due to extenuating circumstances. The whole STMC community has been amazing adapting to the changes and for that we are truly grateful.

Thank you very much to the legion of volunteers - staff, parents, friends - who worked hard before, during, and after the event to ensure that this annual school tradition continued. The community's incredible support to make things happen here at STMC is the single biggest differentiator that separates our school from the rest.

To date, our Knights have raised $38,487 through the Walkathon, which is 64% toward their goal this year of $60,000. 44 per cent of our student body have so far participated in raising funds. Donations to the Walkathon are still accepted online or through our students. It would be wonderful to see the percentage of student participation reach over 50% and funds raised to at least 80%. Visit our online fundraising platform to make your donation here.

Great rewards were given out to our students who have raised at least $50+ through our Walkathon raffle draws. Congratulations to the winners below! and thank you for your efforts and enjoy your prizes!
