Happy October! Fall is in the air, and Homecoming Week is in full swing. Students are enjoying their theme days, so if you see surfers, bikers, and other interesting attire, it is your child’s way of demonstrating school spirit, which is most welcomed :). Other activities include the parade, powder puff game, pep assembly, Friday night football game, and the 2024 Homecoming Dance.

Please do not forget about our in-person Parent Teacher Conference evening that takes place Thursday, October 5, from 4-7:00 p.m. All 9-12 grade teachers will be located in the 10/12 main gym and cafeteria. Please print your student’s schedule from Infinite Campus or have it available on your phone to locate teacher names. Plan to spend 5 minutes with each teacher, as there will more than likely be other families waiting their turn. If you need more time, you can always request an additional phone or in-person meeting.

We look forward to seeing you at all of our events!

Student Services Updates

Sophomores:

On October 5th, Student Services staff will be presenting the Signs of Suicide lesson to all 10th grade students enrolled in a PE class this term. The Signs of Suicide teaches students the importance of Acknowledging that there may be a problem, showing they Care with their words and actions, and then Telling a trusted adult about their concerns. We also discuss the myths and facts surrounding depression and suicide.

Juniors:

All junior parents and guardians are invited to the 11th grade ACP Presentation being held on October 5th at 5:30 in the PAEC. During this meeting we will present information on college planning, military options and the trades as well as options for students in their senior year. RSVP here.

Seniors:

Students interested in joining the military after high school need to take the ASVAB. This test can be arranged with a military recruiter. Military recruiters visit OCHS often. This year, recruiters will be scheduled during GO Time and all students will be able to sign up for a session with them to get more information. Make sure you check out Edficiency to find the times when recruiters will be in the building.

In case you haven't heard, the 2024–25 FAFSA® has been delayed and will not be available until sometime in December 2023. This impacts all seniors applying for financial aid for the 24-25 school year.

Knight Skills

Once again OCHS is presenting our Knight Skills lessons to the students. All 9th and 10th grade students will receive all the lessons over these two years. The 11th and 12th grade students will receive "booster" lessons. In October our lessons will focus on the following topics:

-9th & 10th grade: Lessons will focus on dialectics which is the ability to see multiple perspectives and on "wise mind." Wise mind is the balance between emotions and rationality that fosters wise decisions.
