The Art and Science of Kundalini Yoga
|
WHAT IS IT ABOUT KUNDALINI THAT PEOPLE LOVE SO MUCH? There is something magical about the practice of Kundalini Yoga. When I came to this practice in 2003 I remember thinking, "This is it, I need to learn more." In 2005 flew off to Hawaii to study with the author of my favorite Kundalini texts, Guru Rattana for a 200-hour Kundalini teacher training course on top of an active volcano. We did Kundalini from 5 am to 9 pm, studied astrology, and practiced mudras, mantras, and meditated for hours on end.
It started to change my perceptions and opened my eyes to the life I wanted to live. It was in this program that I had my first vision of Sky House. I drew a picture of a house that was also a yoga studio. It was surrounded by flowers and good smells. It was a safe place where people could come to do deep transformational work. The practice and study of Kundalini yoga helped me form my vision and it continues to inspire me and shape my path. Over the years I have heard similar stories by students and teachers alike. Whether it is the focused breath work, the use of the energetic locks or bandhas, the challenge that the specific yogic sets offer to the body, or the soulful chanting included in each practice, one cannot say. My teacher, Guru Rattana would say it is the the whole system, or technology (her website is yogatech.com for example) of Kundalini Yoga that makes it so powerful.
So, what is it that people love so much about Kundalini Yoga?
I think people love the complexity of the practice and its inclusiveness. In Kundalini we study astrology, chakras, ayurveda, mantras, and include all of these into the practice itself. We also take the time to ask ourselves deep questions while holding poses and spend ample time in meditation between postures and sets. These spaces of inquiry allow the deeper messages of the soul to come through. It might also be because of the emerging research and studies that show the many benefits of Kundalini Yoga and meditation. The Kundalini Research Project is also increasing awareness of the medical benefits of Kundalini Yoga.

Yoga is for Everyone
"Yoga can be taught in a way that makes it accessible to everyone. I've seen everything from women who've experienced great trauma to angry teens, and all of them can do yoga and all of them can receive great benefits from yoga. As teachers we need to learn to speak many languages so many different types of ears can hear us."
