A Message From Our Directors

July is Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, also known as BIPOC Mental Health Month. Bebe Moore Campbell was a mental health advocate, as well as a teacher, journalist, and author. She wrote books for adults and children including Your Blues Ain't Like Mine and Sometimes My Mommy Gets Angry. Barriers to mental health care for minorities include lack of access to resources, cultural beliefs, and fear of judgement. Mental Health America has a free toolkit which includes resources, minority mental health myth busters, and suggestions for normalizing conversations about mental health in your community.

July is also Disability Pride Month. According to AmeriDisabilty, people with disabilities are the largest and most diverse minority group, with one in four Americans having a disability. This month was chosen to reflect the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in July of 1990. This month serves to raise awareness of positive pride felt by many in the disability community, and to educate everyone. There are many stereotypes and misconceptions about people with disabilities which this movement aims to address.

Parenting Tip Sheet: On Boredom

With school out for the summer, parents and caregivers will likely

hear the phrase "I'm Bored' more often in the coming weeks.

Typically, youth try to avoid boredom by using their smartphones, but research shows this is not an effective solution. Children and Screens has developed a tip sheet that addresses youth boredom in the digital age and offers suggestions for helping children and adolescents work through it in healthy, productive ways.

Topics include:

What is boredom, and how is it experienced across developmental stages?

What unique challenges do social media and screen-based

media pose for coping with boredom?

What solutions can parents and caregivers provide for a bored child

to encourage their cognitive and emotional development?
