Kick Off an Exciting School Year with Resources from LEAF

As a new school year begins, the LEAF Program is happy to welcome you back with an overview of the resources we have to support educators in the classroom and in outdoor learning spaces.

Updated LEAF Curriculum Now Online

In the last few years, LEAF staff have been working on changes to our K-12 Forestry Education Lesson Guides. Updated versions of our K-1, 2nd-3rd, 5th-6th, 7th-8th and 9th-12th lessons are now posted online. As always, LEAF materials are available for free as downloads from our website, and printed copies can be purchased by contacting leaf@uwsp.edu

Our 4th grade Lesson Guide, long a favorite of 4th grade teachers because of its focus on state history, is currently undergoing a larger update involving extensive work with focus groups. The first focus group was made up of educators from seven Wisconsin Tribal Nations who provided feedback on how we can ensure LEAF lessons include fair and accurate representations and narratives reflective of all people and histories of the forests in what is now called Wisconsin. We hope to help learners understand how tribes were impacted by settlers, logging and farming, and how tribes have been an excellent example of sustainable forestry. We also worked with 4th grade educators on how to include best educational practices into the updated curriculum. Feedback and revision will be ongoing in this upcoming school year, so watch for updates on this exciting project!

LEAF Tree Identification Tools

A variety of tree identification tools can be found on LEAF’s website, including traditional dichotomous keys, printable tree cards, tree ID-related lessons, and even a winter tree key that focuses on bud structure.

Curriculum Bundles

These convenient collections of forest-focused environmental education materials are designed to save you time! Materials for all curriculum bundles are housed in Google folders and resources can be downloaded, edited, shared, and printed. See the topics and access the bundles here.
