Sacramento, CA – The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Judicial Officers of California, a section of the California Judges Association, congratulates Justice Martin Jenkins (Ret.) on his nomination to the California Supreme Court. We are thrilled that Governor Newsom selected Justice Jenkins. This reflects Governor Newsom’s continued historic support of the LGBT community.
When confirmed, Justice Jenkins will become the first openly LGBT member of the California Supreme Court in the state’s 170-year history and only the third African American man to serve on that body.
Justice Jenkins will bring to his new role 40 years of legal experience, including 30 years serving in the state and federal judiciaries. We have had the pleasure of working with Justice Jenkins. He is a hard-working, ethical jurist who is also compassionate, caring and approaches his work and many achievements with humility.
But it is not only his intellect, discipline and accomplishments which set him apart. Justice Jenkins will bring to the court a perspective informed by a lifetime of unique experiences reflecting our nation’s difficult struggles with homophobia and racism.
Justice Jenkins will be an asset to our Supreme Court. We are pleased to support him in this new endeavor.
