Empowering Youth with Disabilities for Independent Futures

Independent Futures that Work (IFTW) is a project of the Alabama Parent Education Center in partnership with MS Parent Training and Information Center and Parent Training and Information Centers from Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, and Oklahoma.

IFTW is designed to help in the successful transition of youth and young adults from high school into the next stage of adult life. “Transition” is used to describe the period when youth with disabilities (ages 14-26) begin to focus on their future adult life. They learn about supports and services needed to meet their learning, living, and working goals. It is essential for young people to be actively involved in planning their own futures. They need to know what supports will be most helpful to them.

They also need to know how to get those services. IFTW will provide resources and training for youth with disabilities, their families, and professionals. Useful resources on our website will help youth with disabilities learn, live, and work independently. IFTW was recently awarded a new grant, and we look forward to serving youth and young adults as they navigate transitions to post-secondary education, employment, and beyond.

The program committee for the 2026 Mississippi disAbility MegaConference is soliciting presentations on all topics important to people with disabilities and their families. The committee encourages presentations by people with disabilities. Topics of interest may include: assistive technology, direct services, education, early intervention, employment, housing, health care, mental health, recreation, advocacy, or transportation. Other topics may also be considered. The Mississippi disAbility MegaConference program committee will schedule approximately one-hour presentations at any time on June 17 or 18.

Desmeon Thomas Selected to Prestigious Leadership Program

We would like to congratulate Desmeon Thomas, Community Liaison at Living Independence for Everyone (LIFE) of Mississippi, for being selected as one of the only ten national participants to receive the 2025 BACKBONES Leaders Program!

The BACKBONES Leaders Program is a prestigious initiative that empowers adults with spinal cord injury and disabilities (SCI/D) to grow as leaders, deepen their impact, and strengthen their communities. Participants engage in powerful workshops on topics such as public speaking, advocacy, self-care, disability identity, and inclusive leadership — all while learning from seasoned leaders with disabilities across the country. Each leader also receives $1,000 for professional development and professional headshots to support their personal brand and long-term goals.

With over 18 years of advocacy and service, Desmeon embodies resilience, purpose, and leadership. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Entrepreneurship from Jackson State University and an Associate Degree from Hinds Community College, along with training through the Southeast ADA Center.

His passion for disability rights and inclusive policy shines through his community involvement:

Member of the JATRAN Paratransit Advisory Committee, advocate on the City of Jackson ADA Advisory Council, and board member for the City of Jackson Office of Violence Prevention and Trauma Recovery Program, where he leads efforts to end gun violence and build stronger, safer communities.

Desmeon’s work is rooted in compassion, strategy, and a deep belief in the power of accessible, equitable systems. His selection to this national leadership program is a testament to his enduring commitment to equity, empowerment, and independence.
