Indicator Spotlight

CIL2: Program provides families a description about oral care routines for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and schoolagers.

Tooth decay is the most common childhood disease, but it is also entirely preventable. Not all children have access to and opportunities to participate in a daily oral care routine. Having a daily oral care routine supports the health of the child (by providing preventative care) and reinforces the importance of an oral care routine. Including oral care practices in programs and sharing oral care information with families may help improve oral health and reduce disparities at a young age.

To meet the indicator, programs could:

  • Provide information to families about oral care – this could be resources and information about local dentists and dental clinics, articles, or even toothbrushes and toothpaste
  • Include oral care into the daily schedule – update your schedule so families, children, and schoolagers know this is a part of the routine
  • Implement an oral care routine – make sure the routine supports toothbrushing and gum wiping for infants
  • Learn more about oral care through training – knowledge is power! Helping staff understand the importance of oral care can help them implement routines and encourage oral care with children, schoolagers, and families
  • Implement an oral care curriculum - Do you know about Brush Resources and Training? They even have funding support!

This indicator requires that the program has a written description in place about oral care routines for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and schoolagers. This could be a policy, statement, plan, or something else.

For example, the description may include things the program is using or doing to support understanding like:

  • Communication to families about the importance of oral care
  • Daily schedules showing oral care and a statement of the oral care routine
  • Photos of children engaging in oral care and a statement of the oral care routine
  • Policy/procedure on oral care routines

The sky is the limit when it comes to the description, so tailor it to best meet your program and the families you serve.

On-Site Observation Tips

Snow Days

In the winter months, we know that programs will close due to inclement weather. If your program closes due to snow, ice, or a lack of power, please email or text your Assessor as soon as possible, as they may be traveling from a significant distance. Assessors do their best to check for school closings and weather information on the morning of the observation, but we may not always see when a program is closed. A quick email or text message from you will help us stay informed! Assessor emails and phone numbers can be found in their introduction email sent before the observation window.

Accurate Information in the Classrooms Tab

Making sure classrooms are added accurately is crucial to the On-Site Observation process.

Out of school time/schoolage classrooms need to have their own classroom set up in the system. Programs that have a mixed age “after school care” classroom that is separate from their early childhood classroom(s) also need to have a classroom set up, so the observation information can be entered appropriately.

If you need assistance updating your classrooms, please reach out to your local Resource Center. Find your local Great Start to Quality Resource Center here or call 1-877-614-7328.

Learning Opportunities

EmbraceRace: Drawing Differences

Drawing Differences is a series of art lessons about observing, celebrating and valuing diversity. EmbraceRace is turning the page to an exciting chapter that's just right for your 8-11-year-olds (though adaptable for young learners of any age!).

Art has the profound ability to teach us about the beauty in our differences. This week’s lesson will guide your kid(s) to draw different face shapes, facial features, and hair textures. Each portrait they create is an exploration of the characteristics that make us uniquely ourselves.

Discuss, Discover, Draw! Art is not just about what we create but also what we learn along the way. Engage with your young artists in thoughtful conversations with questions like:

  • In what ways do we look similar and different from one another?
  • Why do we look different from one another?
  • How can we show through art that we appreciate those who are different from us?
  • How do we draw those who look different from us?
