Important Updates to GSQ

ICYMI: Adjustments are being made for GSQ to be more supportive for child care programs engaging in the quality improvement process.

These updates include:

  • Discontinuing school-age observation in centers with other age groups.
  • Quality levels will soon be valid for three years.

These adjustments are being made in partnership with the Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential (MiLEAP) and based on feedback from providers and partners.

GSQ Quality Connection

The December Quality Connection featured inormation on Quality Indicators, upcoming CLASS Environment Training, and the new feature in Great Start to Quality where programs can update their current openings so families can find available care for their child more easily than ever.

Curriculum Approval Opportunity

MiLEAP will be offering an opportunity for authors and publishers to submit curriculum for approval for the Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) and for Great Start to Quality.

If you use a curriculum that you would like to be considered for approval, contact the author or publisher and encourage them to submit.

More information can be found on the GSRP webpage.

The publication includes activities, each of which features considerations for children of different experiences and abilities. Then there is additional content on asking great questions to promote a culture of inquiry, additional resources and how to use them, related children’s books, and more. Past issues have focused on topics like make believe, playing with blocks, storytelling, and messy play. All issues include resources in English and Spanish.

Past issues are archived at Play the Head Start Way | HeadStart.gov Instructions for signing up to receive each issue directly are also at this site. Indicator Spotlight

FCP5: Program provides families a description about nutrition and healthy food choices.

Providing families and children with nutritional education helps children learn healthy habits and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Proper nutrition supports learning and promotes better learning outcomes.

When developing or locating nutrition education resources, consider each child’s and family’s traditional/cultural practices. Consistent nutritional practices can support children who may currently be experiencing food insecurity, children whose families are experiencing homelessness, children in the foster care system, and gives families confidence that their children have access to nutritional food while in the program.

High-quality evidence could include:

a. Description on nutrition and healthy food choices

b. Description on nutrition procedures and practices in the program

c. Description of participation with Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) and how this supports children and families to live a healthy lifestyle

This indicator requires that the program has a description about nutrition and healthy food choices. A program’s description must be written and shared with families. This could be a policy, statement, plan, or something else.

For more information about this indicator, review the Quality Indicators Guidance Document.

On-Site Observation Tips

Cold Weather Routines:

Building Connections

Now that the weather is colder, getting ready to go outside can take a little extra time. But these busy moments can also be full of learning and connection.

Even the youngest children can take part. A baby might reach for a sleeve or smile as you talk softly about their warm hat. A toddler may try pulling on boots or zipping a coat while you cheer them on. Preschoolers often enjoy helping friends or singing silly songs while everyone gets ready.

Try turning dressing routines into small learning moments:

  • Name body parts and clothing items as you go, “Your hat goes on your head,” “One mitten, two mitten!”
  • Talk about textures and feelings, “Your coat feels soft,” “These boots are heavy.”
  • Encourage problem solving, “Hmmm, how can we get your thumb in that mitten?”
  • Celebrate effort, “You did it all by yourself!”

When adults slow down and offer encouragement, children feel proud, capable, and connected. With warmth and patience, even putting on mittens can become a special moment for learning and fun.
