Highlights & Events
Happy 2022 to all of our Alumni and Friends!

While the weather has been especially cold and harsh, activities have been heating up at The Landing School as we start the new year. Here are some highlights of what has been keeping us busy here in Arundel, Maine
A Letter From The President
Greetings Landing School Family and Friends.

It hardly seems possible that it’s been nearly a year since our last official newsletter! It’s certainly not for lack of news to report, just the opposite, in fact. Sometimes it just gets too busy to tell people what we’ve been up to.

Fortunately, throughput the COVID pandemic, we have been able to conduct school almost “as normal”. Hands-on, shop-based learning is an essential component of the Landing School education and that has not skipped a beat since the Fall of 2020. This year, with careful testing and vaccination protocols, we have been able to discontinue some of the isolation tactics employed last year and, with the exception of mandatory masking, we are able to provide a pretty normal school experience for all. Students are happy to be heads-down and learning.

As you will read, our students are immersed in meaningful and productive learning whether it’s building Town Class sailboats in Wooden Boat, building Chamberlain Dories and components in Composites, rewiring and repowering boats of various sizes in Marine Systems or Designing state-of-the-art Pilot Boats in Yacht Design. The Landing School continues to be a vibrant beehive of activity and one which provides an exceptional standard of Marine Industry education.

I often like to tell people that after a day of sailing the Town Class sailboats on Sebago Lake last May, I overheard a student tell Jamie Houtz “… that was one of the most meaningful days of my life… to sail a boat I actually built”. We can all be proud of that!

Finally, I would like to extend a personal “thank you” to all of those who are acknowledged in this newsletter as having donated to the school in the past year. Like any non-profit institution, we rely upon the generosity of our friends and family to help provide the resources needed to keep the school operating at the standard we expect of ourselves.

If you find yourself in Southern Maine, or just need an excuse to be there, please plan to stop in and say hello. We are all very proud of what goes on here and we welcome the opportunity to show it off to you.
Notes From The Shop Floor
Composite Boat Building

This semester, composite students are working on building two new 13-foot Chamberlain Dory Rowing Skiffs and they're finishing two Martha's Tender Rowing Skiffs. The Chamberlain Dory hull number one has been made (vacuum infusion process) and is currently in the mold. The forward and midship seats have also already been made through the vacuum infusion process. The seats have been trimmed to shape and bonded into hull number one with adhesive. The aft seat is currently being fabricated and will go into hull number one at the end of the week. Once hull number one is completed, students will move on to hull number 2.
The Martha's Tender Rowing Skiffs were a project that was started during the year of COVID-19. During this year, students switched to online classes so they weren't able to finish the boats.

This year, the students are making thwarts for them. Thwart plugs (master parts that you build the molds off of) were made from a high-density tooling board. The molds of which they build the actual thwart parts out of will be Light Resin Transfer Molding (LRTM) process molds. They will have an A side mold half and a B side mold half.

Students are currently detailing the A side mold halves by sanding, buffing, and filing in the cracks to fair them out. When that step is completed, they will be preparing to put the B side mold halves on top of the A side halves.
Marine Systems

Last semester, Marine Systems students became familiar with the process of direct current electricity. DC electricity is known as an electrical current that flows consistently in one direction. This semester, students are learning about alternating current (AC) electricity which is when the direction of the flow of electrons switches back and forth at regular cycles.

Students are now working on AC systems such as generator inverters and shore power. Instructors are teaching them how to install them properly and safely and how to work on them efficiently. They're also learning the ins and outs of outboard propulsion from Jack Drukker (MS '15, CBB '16) who is conducting a series of guest lectures. This is a new and important addition to our curriculum seeing as how prevalent outboards are becoming in the industry!

In the coming weeks, students will be drawing schematics and building their AC panel boards, learning how to properly install radar systems, GPS, networking, chart plotters, and other electronic installs, as well as continuing to work on the project boats. In addition, students will focus on sailboat technology and fundamentals, and learn the technology behind water-makers, hydraulics, mechanical steering, HVAC, and plumbing and sanitation.
Yacht Design
This semester, the students in yacht design are creating hulls for one of their latest projects - a 60ft aluminum pilot boat. Students are designing the hulls using Rhinoceros, a 3D CAD program and using a plug-in called Orca to use naval architecture-specific details of the models.

In the coming weeks, students will begin to work on designing a 40ft sailboat using the same software and 3D modeling tools. Through the course of designing both boats, students will learn more about how to develop and design structures and scantlings for their projects. The structural details will conform to the ABS and/or ISO standards.
Duane Branch (Yacht Design Instructor) and Jim Cumiskey (Learning Resource Center & Student Services) are celebrating the newest addition to the Yacht Design classroom - a new wide format scanner!

This scanner allows the school to archive our 1400+ drawing collection, with some drawings dating back to 1939! This incredible tool will help The Landing School preserve the library of drawings and enable students to view drawings electronically. They will also be able to pull up multiple drawings at once.

On behalf of the faculty, staff, and students, we would like to give a special thank you to Duane Branch for donating a significant portion of the funds needed for this new addition.
Wooden Boat Building
As we begin the Spring semester in the Wooden Boat Building program, the Town Class Boats are right side up and the students have begun cleaning and fitting out the interior and top side of the boats! The boat crews appear to be on target to reach the next milestone on the Town Class which is the completion of the deck frames.

In addition to building the "Townies", the students are working on an estimating assignment using plans for the Calypso Dory Skiff. Part 1 involved estimating the materials for components of the boat and part 2 tasks the students with estimating completion time for various parts of the build. Having a basic knowledge of the process of estimating time and materials will help the students with future projects. The students have some exciting woodworking projects on the horizon, including building a hanging knee which will provide insight into the process and importance of accurate pattern making, a raised panel door, and a small handrail, both of which will challenge the students to dive deeper into the functionality of some of our mill room power tools.

As the town Class Sloops continue to progress, our students are beginning to see, what was, a pile of plywood and Douglas fir become a functional sailboat, ready for launch!

IPAP Week Recap

After students returned from holiday break, they all participated in IPAP week. "IPAP" is our Inter Program Activity Period which allows students to spend a week in one of the other three programs at the school. Students learn about different aspects of the marine industry and become exposed to other opportunities at The Landing School.
Jack and Richard are both Marine System students who decided to try Wooden Boat Building. They had fun learning the basics of the program and enjoyed building their own half hull models.
Ben is a Marine Systems student and decided to try Composites for IPAP week. After a few more finishing touches, his skimboard will be ready to ride some waves.
Snap-On Tools Visits To Launch The Student Excellence Program
On December 8th, Jason George and Jonah Normandeau of Snap-on Industrial Tools visited The Landing School to register students for its Student Excellence program. The Snap-On Student Excellence Program offers students the opportunity to purchase professional quality Snap-on tools at a significant discount similar to what Snap-On distributors pay. The program allows students to acquire the tools they need for their education at The Landing School classroom. All full-time students enrolled at The Landing School and currently fulfilling their curriculum requirements are eligible for the Student Excellence Program.

After learning about the Snap-On Student Excellence program while doing industry fundraising research, the school reached out to Snap-On to learn about the program and inform Snap-On about how The Landing School fits their requirements as a Student Excellence partner. There was a strong turnout of students and faculty to learn about and to register for the Snap-On Student Excellence program. “Providing our students with access to quality tools is a real benefit for them to start off their education and career with tools that will last them a lifetime. To be able to get these tools at major cost savings is an added bonus for our students” noted Greg Caruso, Industry Relations and Facilities Manager. This program is active as of 2022 and will be offered to all incoming students going forward.
New Faces Welcomed Aboard
We're pleased to announce the addition of three new team members to The Landing School staff! Mike Boles as Recruiting and Admissions Manager, Juliet Karam as Marketing Manager, and Jon Landers as Director of Development. The Landing School is excited to have these talented professionals join the team.
