The Lapis: Library Community News and Events

"Because the eye gazes but can catch no glimpse of it, It is called elusive. Because the ear listens but cannot hear it, It is called the rarefied. Because the hand feels for it but cannot find it, It is called the infinitesimal. … These are called the shapeless shapes, Forms without form, Vague semblances. Go towards them, and you can see no front; Go after them, and you see no rear.”

C.G. Jung, Synchronicity, An Acausal Connecting Principle

Jorge Luis Borges

Synchronicity: The Confluence of Matter and Psyche,

When Eros Touches Soul

February 26, 27 & 28, 2026

(11 CE Credits Available)

Jung’s understanding and advocacy of the principle of synchronicity augments the reigning scientistic principle of cause and effect, acknowledging the existence of meaningful coincidences of the inner and outer worlds. This phenomenon recognizes a whole and holistic category of knowing that proves elusive, given the clear dominance of the traditional scientific paradigm. For Jung, synchronicity is an a-causal connecting principle that underlies the mysterious relationship between Psyche and Matter. While Psyche and Matter are routinely seen to exist independently, synchronicities reveal a relationship between the two that manifests a unified field, what the ancients referred to as the unus mundus, the one world.

Join the Assisi Institute & the C.G. Jung Library of Tampa Bay for a 3-day international conference, live and on zoom, exploring Jung's contribution to the re-enchantment of the universe that brings science and spirituality back into creative dialogue.

The Psyche and the Transformation of the Reality Planes (The Place of Creation, Vol. 3)

by Erich Neumann

The Israeli analytical psychologist Erich Neumann, whom C. G. Jung regarded as one of his most gifted students, devoted much of his later writing to the theme of creativity. This is the third volume of Neumann’s essays on that subject. Neumann found his examples not only in the work of writers and artists—William Blake, Goethe, Rilke, Kafka, Klee, Chagall, Picasso, Trakl—but as well in that of physicists, biologists, psychiatrists, and philosophers. Confronting the problem of portraying men and women as creative beings, Neumann expanded the concepts of Jungian psychology with a more comprehensive definition of the archetype and a new concept—“unitary reality.” Whether or not humanity can be restored to health from its present situation as a self-endangered species depends, according to Neumann, on whether we can experience ourselves as truly creative, in touch with our own being and the world’s being.

The Inferior Function

by Marie-Louise von Franz

In this volume, two world-renowned psychologists, Marie-Louise von Franz and James Hillman, give detailed accounts of C.G. Jung’s personality types. In her essay, “The Inferior Function,” Marie-Louise von Franz shows the inferior shadow side of each of the eight kinds of typical functioning, while James Hillman differentiates in his essay, “The Feeling Function,” genuine feeling from look-alikes and substitutes. Both essays are a rich source of ideas for study and an enjoyable guide for self-discovery. Full of psychological insights into personal habits, temperaments, and character.

Upcoming Lecture & Workshop by Guest Presenter

Dr. Polly Young-Eisendrath

Behold the Gates of Mercy

This presentation draws principally on two models of substrate consciousness: Jung’s collective psyche and Buddhist understandings of mind and suffering. Dr. Polly Young-Eisendrath explores trauma not only as a personal psychological wound, but as a shared human condition that shapes ethical life, imagination, and responsibility.

Speaker: Dr. Polly Young-Eisendrath

Lecture Date: Thursday, March 19th

Location: Saint Leo Education Building

1403 N. Howard Ave.

Time: 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.

This workshop introduces the Skill of Real Dialogue as a mindfulness practice for remaining present and open during emotional activation. Staying alert and responsive during emotional conflicts or disagreements requires special mindfulness skills—the ability to concentrate and remain open while being activated. This skill is essential for clinical work, organizational life, and intimate relationships. Participants will learn about human emotions, emotional entanglements, and how to track their own subjectivity in real time so that difficult conversations can be engaged without dehumanizing oneself or others.

Date: March 21st

Location: Stovall House

4621 Bayshore Blvd.

Time: 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Cost: Members $150 / Non-Members $165

Assoluta ~ The Incomparable Gelsey Kirkland ~ Spirit & Matter

The concept of simultaneity inheres within the notion of synchronicity. Place and time are not rigid structures here, but they do create a focal point for consciousness to experience what is here and not here, now and always, fleeting and eternal. Music so succinctly captures the subtle substance between spirit and matter. It is spirit-leaning, but relies on material fingers, strings, brass, bows, and hours upon hours of human engagement, craft development, discipline, and inspiration. To embody music, is to enflesh spirit in a very particular (indeed an individual) way. When a piece is played or danced in a way that enlivens the experience of the notes and the energy behind them, we describe the artist's gifted "musicality." To be musical, to uniquely translate written notes into sound, or to translate music into movement; rather, to become music, is an act of elevation. And in Gelsey Kirkland's case, it's flight.

We Are a Diverse, Thoughtful, Heart-Centered Community.

The unconscious is an immense universe worthy of your careful attention. Attended to, it is a profound source of revelation and meaning in an otherwise chaotic contemporary world. The Library is a living symbol, a source containing stores of hidden or deeply buried ideas and images that want to be discovered and known. Our community exists to stimulate a process of discovery, to support psychological discernment and maturation, to spark the creative instinct, and to facilitate individuation.
