“I knew then that ‘w-a-t-e-r’ meant the wonderful cool something that was flowing over my hand. That living word awakened my soul, gave it light, hope, joy, set it free. There were barriers still, it is true, but barriers that in time could be swept away.”

Behold The Gates of Mercy
This presentation draws principally on two models of substrate consciousness: Jung’s collective psyche and Buddhist understandings of mind and suffering. She is the founder and Executive Director of the Center for Real Dialogue™, a nonprofit dedicated to cultivating psychological maturity, ethical wisdom, and humanizing dialogue across differences.

This workshop introduces the Skill of Real Dialogue as a mindfulness practice for remaining present and open during emotional activation. Staying alert and responsive during emotional conflicts or disagreements requires special mindfulness skills—the ability to concentrate and remain open while being activated. This skill is essential for clinical work, organizational life, and intimate relationships. Participants will learn about human emotions, emotional entanglements, and how to track their own subjectivity in real time so that difficult conversations can be engaged without dehumanizing oneself or others.

Free Reading Discussion ~ April 2nd C.G. Jung's Rehabilitation of the Feeling Function in Our Civilization
by Marie-Louise von Franz
This is the provocative, final lecture given in 1986 by Marie-Louise von Franz, a lifelong colleague of C. G. Jung and an accomplished scholar, teacher, analyst, and author. Her theme is Jung’s critique of twentieth century western culture for overvaluing the scientific method and rationalism at the expense of empathy and differentiated relatedness. She argues that the development of individual conscious relationships is the only thing that allows for the development of the human soul. Only this prevents cruelty, which, she notes, is often accompanied by sentimentality and emotionality as opposed to true empathy. She develops her theme by citing a student lecture by Jung, where he quotes Kant’s belief that an ethical stance requires a personal relationship to something beyond ordinary experience (god, the Self, the “spirit world”).

April 16th ~ Lecture: The 10 Ox-Herding Pictures
The Ten Ox-Herding Pictures are an ancient allegory dating back to 11th or 12th century China, used to illustrate the path to enlightenment. We are going to look at the series of ten paintings through the lens of Jungian psychology. The connection with the individuation process as described by Jung over the course of 20 volumes of the Collected Works will be highlighted, noting the resonance between these 10 pictures and Analytical Psychology. These 10 images illustrate the journey of a young boy, the ox-herder, searching for his missing ox. In Zen terms, it is the search for Awakening and True Reality. In Jungian terms, it is the ego’s search for the archetypal Self. Come to the lecture to consider how East meets West by way of these amazing pictures.

A Field Guide to American Cultural Complexes: The Battleground of the Splintered American Psyche
by Thomas Singer, MD
Featuring more than 100 symbolic images and text, A Field Guide to American Cultural Complexes: The Battleground of the Splintered American Psyche (Chiron Publications) identifies the common species of cultural complexes that populate the American political, social, and psychological landscape. These complexes are splinter personalities of the American psyche. When triggered, they behave like nuclear-powered sources of potent emotion, black-and-white thinking, self-reinforcing memory, and stereotypical behavior.
Join the C.G. Jung Library Reading Discussion Group as we consider this recently published and very timely read. There are a select number of copies pre-ordered and available for a discounted price at the Library. Those interested in obtaining a copy, please email info@jungtampa.org to find out more.
| | | Announcing the Library's Newly Featured Artist ~ Laura Hensley | Laura Hensley, LMHC is an artist and psychotherapist based in St. Petersburg, Florida. Her professional work is richly informed by Jungian theory and practice, and as a result, often includes encounters with archetypal forms and numinous energies. In tandem, her personal creative practices are grounded in Expressive Arts, a multimodal approach to healing and personal growth built on Jung’s same foundational concepts and practices, in particular his exhortation to us all, to “allow the unconscious to speak.” | | | May 2016 Mandala Making Workshop | | | |
Making Mandalas - Imaging the Whole Self ~ Thursday, May 21st from 7-9 p.m.
Join the C.G. Jung Library of Tampa Bay and Library board member and guest presenter Laura Hensley, LMHC, for a Red Book inspired evening of exploration and visual creativity. We will dive deeply into the symbolic nature, psychological function, and cultural history of mandalas, and participants will be invited to give form and expression to the archetype of the Self by making a “sacred circle” of their own. This will be an easy, low pressure process, and require absolutely no artistic “skill” or training. Art materials will be provided, though participants are welcome to bring their own if they’d like.

We Are a Diverse, Thoughtful, Heart-Centered Community.
The unconscious is an immense universe worthy of your careful attention. Attended to, it is a profound source of revelation and meaning in an otherwise chaotic contemporary world. The Library is a living symbol, a source containing stores of hidden or deeply buried ideas and images that want to be discovered and known. Our community exists to stimulate a process of discovery, to support psychological discernment and maturation, to spark the creative instinct, and to facilitate individuation.
