Dear People of Ascension,

Today two topics are on my mind: our stewardship ingathering this coming Sunday, and the Thanksgiving holiday next week. Gratitude and generosity entwine through them both, two aspects of a life lived both faithfully and joyfully. Here, for your musing about the two together, is a harvest prayer from Prayers for an Inclusive Church, by Steven Shakespeare:
Gracious One,
reaching our need,
overcoming our alienation:
give us a spirit of gratitude
for the abundance of the earth,
the wildness of its creatures,
the global threads
that bind friend and foreigner;
may our thanks be the soil
in which a dream of justice grows;
through Jesus Christ, the Lord of the harvest.
Amen.
Blessings-

Liz
Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for? (Audience) Why should they care? (Benefit) What do I want them to do here? (Call-to-Action)

Create a great offer by adding words like "free" "personalized" "complimentary" or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take an action, so think about inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining!"

Sunday Evening "Meditation and Sacrament" Service Returns at a New Time! As we start the church year on the first Sunday of Advent, November 28, we will once more begin our Meditation and Sacrament service; the new time is 6 pm. This is a contemplative service of interfaith readings, music and communion, with significant silence to pray, meditate or just sit in our sacred space. From the Vestry:
Bullet Points from this month's vestry meeting:
  • Tents and heaters will be provided for coffee hour so we can still gather for coffee hour outside as the days get colder
  • Sunday evening services will resume again in Advent, starting at 6pm instead of 7pm.
  • If you need information about parish finances (including your pledge) call the parish office and speak to Kelli Long, our Business Manager.
Vestry Nominations - Four people are to be elected to the Ascension vestry at our annual meeting on Jan. 30, 2022. Serving on the vestry is an opportunity to provide spiritually grounded leadership, with an emphasis on our finances and our three historic properties. Members are to support the church’s mission by their actions and by regular attendance at services, including Zoom of course. If you are interested in running or wish to nominate someone, please obtain forms from the church office or from a member of the nominating committee: Isabel Spencer, Rachel Sedor, Shep Skiff or Steve Hubbard. Candidates must have been pledging members of the Church of the Ascension for one year prior to the meeting. Vestry members are expected to attend regular meetings, which are on the third Wednesday of every month, except August. The vestry retreat will be held Feb. 4 & 5. The deadline for nominations is December 19. For additional information, please see a committee member.
Ascension Advent Calendar- One of the pleasures of last year was our Advent calendar, featuring scripture readings for each day of the season and photographs taken by members of Ascension. If you would like to participate this year, or if you have questions, please contact Mother Liz today, November 22. She will assign you a date and send you a Bible verse for your meditation (you need not illustrate it with your photo, just see what it sparks as you look at the world around you). As we watch and wait, we look forward to seeing this season with new eyes!
Afghan Winter Coat Drive- Ascension is joining with the Interfaith Center of New York and other partners to collect coats for Afghan refugees housed at Fort Dix, NJ. Focus is on women's coats, but men's and children's coats are also gratefully received, as are warm hats, scarves, and gloves. We are the downtown collection center for a drive taking place throughout the five boroughs. We are receiving coats in the parish hall Monday-Friday 9-5. They will be collected on Friday, December 4 and delivered to those who need them. Please bring new or gently used coats! Thank you!
Support the Parish! Please check us out at ascensionnyc.org/give to find out how easy and secure it is. Click the envelope on the right to go the Ascension Website for more information and to give, whether a one-time donation, pledge payment, or make a new pledge.

Our parish can only continue its mission and ministry because of the generosity of parishioners, visitors, and friends of the parish and we are working hard to make our online giving as easy and seamless as possible.

(If you experience any issues with Abundant Giving, please email us at websexton@ascensionnyc.org)

A Note about Using Abundant Giving: When you donate and pledge through the Abundant Giving app or go through the website, you need to direct your donation to the correct category. There are multiple categories to choose from:
  • Offering Plate
  • Stewardship Pledge 2021
  • Rector's Fund
  • Memorial Gift
These categories change as we update categories during the year. (An example would be when we delete the Easter flowers category after Easter and add Christmas flowers for the weeks leading up to Christmas.)

To donate through your app or the website, click the link above. The next screen will prompt you: "How Much Do You Want To Give?" Next to that, is a drop-down list of categories. Offering plate is always listed first. Click on the little arrow and the list will appear. Click on which ever category you want your donation to be credited. It is important to identify which category you are donating to so that your year end statement will be correct.
