Pastor Michael & Summer Harsch

After 20 Riverbend Years

Harsches Heading
To Sarasota Church

Michael Harsch, a member of the Riverbend pastoral staff for the last 20 years, has accepted a pastoral position at Lakewood Ranch Baptist Church in Sarasota, Fla. He will begin in that new role in early August.
"We believe God has directed us to be part of the ministry team at Lakewood Ranch," said Pastor Michael. "I will be in the role of Family Pastor there. While it is bittersweet to be leaving the only place I've served during my ministry career, we do believe this move is God's will."

Harsch has served the bulk of his Riverbend tenure (June 1998-now) as Pastor of Students. He has also served as Pastor of Family Ministries and Pastor of Counseling Ministries. He came here soon after graduating from Liberty (Va.) University and marrying the former Summer Crowe, whom he met at Liberty.
Summer has served faithfully at Riverbend over the years, most recently as Children's Director.

The three children of Pastor Michael & Summer--Autumn (17), Noah (15) and Payton (12)--have grown up through the various ministries at Riverbend.

"This is a blessing," said Teaching Pastor Scott Menez. "Our goal is to send men out, and I figured when I came here nearly three years ago that God would one day move Michael and his multi-giftedness to another church."

Said Rick Hardison, Senior Pastor at Lakewood Ranch:  "We are thrilled to see what the Lord will do in Lakewood Ranch through the Harsch family. There's no doubt about it: our congregation is a beneficiary of Riverbend's commitment to the gospel. May our God multiply your labors as you send Pastor Michael our way."

Pastor Scott added: "Personally, we hate to lose Pastor Michael, Summer and the family, but we realize God is doing something special in the ministry of that family, the ministry at Lakewood Ranch and the ministry at Riverbend. He, Summer and the kids will be missed. They leave big gaps to fill, but God will take care of all that."

A reception in honor of the Harsches is set Wednesday, July 11.  Details to come.

Sacramento River Cats lefthander
Conner Menez has been named the Pacific Coast League's Pitcher of the Week for the period of May 28-June 3.
In only his second career Triple-A start, and two days after his 23rd birthday, Menez tossed seven shutout innings on May 31 at El Paso. He surrendered only one hit, one walk, struck out eight and faced just two batters over the minimum, throwing 64 of his 99 pitches for strikes. The lone hit he allowed was a one out single in the fifth inning; he retired the next eight batters to finish off his outing.
Aside from this start for Sacramento and another on April 12, Menez has spent the season with the Single-A San Jose Giants (where he is now).

Conner is the son of Pastor Scott & Gina Menez.

Members May Audit
Seminary Courses

Hermeneutics 1, an introduction to the science and art of interpreting the Bible, is the first course available for auditing by Riverbend members in the church's new Christ Theological Seminary.

Auditing, which is attending a class as a secondary participant (not for seminary credit), requires a $50 fee paid before the start of the course. Riverbend members are eligible to audit on a first-come, space-available basis.

Hermeneutics 1 will be taught by Pastor Brian Shealy over eight class settings--four Tuesdays (Aug. 7, 14, 21, 28) and four Thursdays (Aug. 9, 16, 23, 30). All will meet in Room 185 at the church during 6-9:45 p.m. each evening. That course, comprising the first module of instruction, will then be complete.  After a one-week break, the seminary's second course will be taught--Hermeneutics 2 during Sept. 8-Oct. 4.

Thus far, ten church members have registered to audit the first course. They will join the 11 enrollees who are taking the course for credit toward one of the major degrees offered--Master of Divinity or Master of Arts.

If you are interested in auditing, complete the application form available at the Welcome Center and leave it in church office (with your auditing fee).  Deadline to apply (for audit):  Friday, July 24.
