Happy Semiquincentennial, America! Are you excited about the upcoming celebrations to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States? We are! Our best projects take us deep into the archives where we uncover fascinating facts about the buildings we are working on and the communities that they are part of. Projects resonate with team members for myriad reasons. We will be sharing some of these with you over the coming year in The Latest and through our social media. If you are not yet a follower, please find us on your favorite platform (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn).
Our theme for January is Industrialization. Heritage President Cindy Hamilton shares a favorite project: Haslett Warehouse in San Francisco, CA. Visit the Heritage LinkedIn, Facebook, or Instagram feeds for more information about this property.
Built 1907–1909 for the California Fruit Canners Association, the warehouse exemplifies the industrial heart of San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf and tells the story of the neighborhood’s role in early 20th century food processing – a story that has largely disappeared as many of the historic warehouses in the area have been razed. Fruits and vegetables from California’s interior arrived by riverboat and ferry and were canned and stored here for distribution under the Del Monte label – an early example of American agricultural and industrial innovation.
