Quick tip for better photography

“The first step in becoming a good photographer is to not be afraid of getting close. A photograph is rarely too close, but is often too distant. … After you get a close photo, go very wide. Photograph a variety of distances; close, medium, and wide.”

-- Andrea Bruce, photographer and educator, excerpt from “15 photojournalism tips for reporters, from the founder of Down in the County” (Better News)

How peer support can help journalists mitigate stress

“Peer supporters are not therapists or case workers, but they learn when to share resources with a journalist who might need professional help. They also learn how to set boundaries to avoid getting too deep in areas that peer supporters may not be able to address. The peer support sessions are set to a maximum of three sessions, each lasting 40 minutes to an hour. Peer supporters also learn to say when they can’t help the other person and instead offer someone else or an expert who may be able to help.”

-- Naseem Miller, senior editor for health at The Journalist’s Resource, excerpt from “What peer support in journalism looks like” (The Journalist’s Resource)
