Resume tips from a newsroom recruiter

“When it comes to shopping your resume, one size does NOT fit all. All roles in media are NOT the same. Just like different outfits for different occasions, have different resumes for different situations. As you're applying for various positions, pay attention to each role, its duties and the kind of coverage involved. Really consider which experiences and skills are relevant to each hiring manager (not to you). Edit and organize accordingly. There are times when having three pages’ worth of work experience can REALLY work AGAINST you (such as in most news reporting roles where editors put a premium on BREVITY)…but there are times when it might not (such as for an adjunct instructor role). When in doubt, get a second opinion from a trusted source – i.e. someone familiar with the role you’re applying for.”
