Journalists: Make a government shutdown more tangible for your community

Shai Akabas, executive director, Economic Policy Program at the Bipartisan Policy Center: [Help] the American people understand that [a government shut down] is wildly inefficient for American taxpayers and the government. We're basically having federal employees spend time shutting down the federal government — it takes them time to turn off the system, lock the doors, etc. And then during the period that the government is shut down, we are still paying all federal employees. We're just telling about a third of them to stay home and not do their jobs. That is both a waste of government resources, but also impacting people who are expecting to be relying on those resources.
