How ProPublica journalists used pre-reporting to build trust with sources

“Before interviewing people in Portland, Oregon, for example, we spent weeks calling street librarians and medics, service providers, and advocates, including some who had experienced homelessness. We asked for feedback on everything from how we were planning to phrase our questions to how to stay in touch with people — and adjusted our reporting plan in response. They also flagged things we weren’t thinking about. You should also ask what language the community uses to describe issues and discuss this with your editors.”

3 tips to become a better mentor

“Being a mentor isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about being a supportive partner in someone’s growth. By sharing your knowledge and creating a safe space for learning, you’ll make a lasting impact on their career—and your own. …

1. Set clear expectations. Define the goals of the mentoring relationship together. Ask your mentee what their goals are both in their career and in the mentorship. Agree on how often you’ll meet, preferred communication methods, and the focus areas for development.

2. Listen more than you talk. Active listening is key. Ask open-ended questions and give your mentee space to explore their thoughts and ideas.

3. Tailor your guidance. Recognize that each mentee is unique. Adapt your advice and approach to their needs, strengths, and career aspirations.”
