Coming Back for More: How Repeat Developers Multiply the Success of the Historic Tax Credit

In this month’s Historic Tax Credit (HTC) Tool Box article in the Novogradac Journal of Tax Credits, Cindy Hamilton describes how repeat developers like The Alexander Company are essential to the success of the Historic Tax Credit (HTC) program, using their expertise to tackle increasingly complex historic building redevelopment projects. With decades of experience, the Alexander Company exemplifies how deep knowledge of the HTC program can turn challenging projects into sustainable successes. Motivated by both financial feasibility and a strong belief in preservation, they—and others like them—demonstrate the lasting impact of the HTC program nationwide.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT

Stately Historic Apartment House to Become Workforce Housing

The Interdale Apartments has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places! Located in Wichita, Kansas, the building is an early example of the conventional low-rise apartment. The Italian Renaissance Revival styling features decorative brick and terra cotta elements, while the interior has five separate apartment blocks, each with an individual entrance and two units per floor. When completed 1917, the building was celebrated as the the finest apartment house in town, featuring steam heat, electric lights, murphy beds, large sun parlors, and mahogany trim within the units. The stylish apartment building is currently undergoing an HTC rehabilitation for workforce housing. We're proud to be a part of this transformative project that will provide critical affordable housing to Wichita.

A Week in Milwaukee with Preservationists from Across the US

We were thrilled to be a sponsor of the National Trust's PastForward conference this year in beautiful Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Jen, Amanda, Phoebe, and Elizabeth proudly represented Heritage at the conference and offered insights on educational panels, as well as tours of our projects, including the Horlick Malted Milk complex and the Journal Commons building (a Richard H. Driehaus National Preservation Award-winning project). It's always a pleasure to connect with fellow preservationists.

Up next: the Novogradac Historic Tax Credit Conference in Cleveland October 8-10, where Cindy Hamilton, Elizabeth Rosin, and Nick Kraus will serve on panels discussing various topics related to HTCs. We hope to see you there!

TEAM UPDATES

Introducing Anna Campbell

We're expanding! Meet Anna Campbell. Anna joined our team as a Project Coordinator in early September. With a background in preserving historic structures within some of our National Parks in the Southwestern region of the country, Anna is excited to return to Kansas City to support historic tax credit projects and preserve the history of her hometown. In her free time, she likes to explore local coffeeshops/breweries/restaurants for the best KC bites and take her cat Cricket on urban hikes around town.
