Journal Commons wins the 2024 Richard H. Driehaus Foundation National Preservation Award

Heritage is thrilled to announce that the rehabilitation of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Buildings received the prestigious Driehaus Award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Built in 1924 with a 1962 addition, the complex was converted from offices into housing that highlights its long history as a notable landmark in Milwaukee. Because of their age gap, the buildings were a combination of architectural styles, including Renaissance Revival, Art Deco, and the Modern Movement. After a steep decline in the newspaper business starting in the mid-2000s, the buildings went on the market in the 2010s. Milwaukee developer Joshua Jeffers stepped in to rehabilitate the buildings utilizing Historic Tax Credits (HTCs), turning them into housing for area students. Heritage is honored to have been a part of this transformative project. Make sure to check our social media channels to read more about the complex’s history, the process of pursuing HTCs, navigating challenges, and more.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT

Overcoming Obstacles in KC

The Crispus Attucks School in the historic 18th & Vine Jazz District in Kansas City was recently rehabilitated into a haven for local artists by the world-renowned Zhou Brothers. Now called the Zhou B Art Center, the school underwent a $27 million restoration which involved a series of challenges, most significantly the building’s heavily deteriorated state at the start of the project. Heritage was able to navigate the HTC process, including the construction of a new glass atrium, resulting in a cultural and creative hub in the Jazz District. When asked about the project, ShanZou Zhoushi’s said: “The dream is easy, but it comes with a lot of hard work and a lot of commitment.” We couldn’t agree more!
