New partnership with MSU brings English Language learning, supports to Sherwood Elementary neighborhood
Adults in Briarwood Mobile Home Park will receive English instruction and resources for newcomer families this fall.

Sherwood Elementary School is one of many sites in Springfield Public Schools that serves a diverse group of multilingual students. In one Sherwood neighborhood, a growing population of newcomers from central America have found Sherwood as their children’s safe space to learn and thrive. But Sherwood educators wanted to do more, creating the Removing Barriers through English Language Instruction project and partnership with Missouri State University. A series of 6-8 English classes for Briarwood Mobile Home Park residents will begin fall 2022.

"Saphirra is one of the most talented students I've ever worked with, and she's willing to do anything if it means she gets to be creative. She knows how to harness her skills, and at such a young age, that's really impressive."

FACES OF SPS
“Every student in our club gets to experience success and fun using math they've learned in class, but possibly from a new angle."

Pittman Elementary
"We know that for our students to thrive, they must feel valued and connected as a part of our learning community, which is exactly what our Math Club offers. Crazy 8’s challenges students to work together to approach math from different angles. The Bedtime Math Foundation provides all of the materials, and our mathematicians are excited to see what they’ll be working with each week. Plus, Pittman mathematicians get to take home the “tools'' they've worked with. One week it might be a beach ball, another week a spyglass. Every student in our club gets to experience success and fun using math they’ve learned in class, but possibly from a new angle."
