HEARD IN THE GARDEN
“I wasn’t sure I was going to enjoy sewing, and I really have liked it. I wanted to do something fun that also has an artistic element. I’m going to the Kansas City Art Institute next year, and I want to explore every form of art. Sewing, fashion, creating with fabric, that’s art. I want to be creative in all forms, and this helps me figure out how to create art using fabric.”

FACES OF SPS
“It's important to partner with local organizations to educate our students on how to interact with those who are different than them."
Emily Franko
School Counselor
Hickory Hills Elementary School
"For school counselors, our role looks different every day in the variety of ways we support students and families. I teach social-emotional lessons, support students in small groups or in individual sessions, implement schoolwide programming and partner with our families and community. This school year at Hickory, we have learned about Down Syndrome and raised $1,921.19 for Down Syndrome Group of the Ozarks. We interviewed two adults with Down Syndrome, and students made “designer genes” socks in art classes. It’s important to partner with local organizations to educate our students on how to interact with those who are different than them. After all, we all have strengths and weaknesses, and it’s what makes our world an incredible place!"
