The fear of missing out: We’ve all experienced it.

This all-encompassing feeling that we’re not living our best lives can be especially overwhelming during the pandemic. With the warnings from health experts to avoid holiday gatherings, this year Thanksgiving can seem isolating.

But the good news is that there are ways to overcome the stress from FOMO:

  • Take a brief social media hiatus. When faced with FOMO, it can be tempting to login to Facebook or Instagram to feel connected to others. However, increased use of these sites can lead to more anxiety and depression.
  • Start a journal. Write down everything you’re grateful for right now. Then make a goal list for what you hope to accomplish in the next week, month or year.
  • Talk to a friend. “Talking it out” can help mitigate negative feelings.
  • Talk to yourself. (Yes, really, it is good for you.) But remember to show yourself the same kindness you show others.
  • Go outside. Nature can help lift your spirits and ease stress.
  • Accept that you — and the rest of the world — will never “have it all.” And that’s OK. Prioritize what matters the most to you and let go of the rest.
  • Practice mindfulness. This can help you be more present and enjoy the moment.
  • Express your gratitude. Take time this week to check in with family or friends and let them know how thankful you are to have them in your life.

And if you — like many of us around the world — will be spending the holidays alone, here are some suggestions to make it special.
