This is part of a series highlighting Heritage Consulting Group projects in celebration of America's semiquincentennial. Our work in commercial real estate unites our love of history and architecture with building reuse. Our best projects uncover fascinating facts about the buildings we are working on and the communities that they are part of. Let's celebrate #America250 together through the lens of historic preservation.
Earth Day and the start of fly-fishing season have Sr. Project Manager Scott Doyle thinking about the Beaverkill Valley Inn in upstate New York. In nearly continuous operation since 1895, it is one of the oldest surviving hotels built for sport fishermen. Advances in fishing technology, such as fly-tying, rod-making, and fish and river management, led the sport of fly-fishing to surge in popularity during the late 19th century. In addition to the vernacular late-Victorian guesthouse, the 60-acre property includes a variety of historic and contemporary facilities to entertain guests year-round – a clubhouse, tennis courts, hiking/cross country skiing trails, a pond, and a skating rink. Scott worked closely with the Beaverkill Mountain Club, owners of the property, to repair and update the inn for continued use by future generations of sport fisherman and recreational travelers while protecting the character-defining features of the Inn.
