Westport Elementary early readers read books
to shelter dogs
Westport students grades 1-3 read "Madeline Finn and the Shelter Dog," then read books to shelter dogs from C.A.R.E. Animal Sanctuary.

“Reading to the dogs gives students a chance to read and not be critiqued or graded,” said Carmen Puryear, elementary library media specialist at Westport. “The students love interacting with the dogs, and that helps them have an overall great feeling about reading.”

FACES OF SPS
"A student cannot reach their full potential if they are hungry, so we we want to focus on hospitality within schools' dining rooms."
Chef Kyle Houston
Nutrition Services Executive Chef
Springfield Public Schools
“As Executive Chef for SPS, I will be working one-on-one with the Nutrition Services team to create new ideas, culinary flare and chef-inspired foods for our guests (students). As a father, I believe that food needs to be natural, simple, and fresh as possible but most importantly taste good! A student cannot reach their full potential if they are hungry, so we want to focus on hospitality and letting our students know that their voice is heard within their schools’ dining rooms. The culinary team throughout SPS, the cooks and frontline employees, are what it takes to go above and beyond for students, and my job wouldn’t be possible without them.”
