National Minority Health Month
April is National Minority Health Month—a month that aims to build awareness about the disproportionate burden of premature death and illness in people from racial and ethnic minority groups. Plus, it encourages action through health education, early detection and control of disease complications.
This year’s theme is Better Health Through Better Understanding—it addresses how we can improve health literacy and support the cultural and linguistic needs of our communities. Check out these resources that sheds light on these issues:

Joining Groups on MyNRMN
MyNRMN offers plenty of ways to connect with fellow mentors and mentees—and one way you can do this is by harnessing the MyGroups feature. We have over 200 groups for you to join and connect with our network. Here, you can network for an upcoming conference or start a discussion with professionals in the same field of study.
Need a group to join? Start with the Journey to Medical Profession: Career and Research Mentoring Group.
Its objective is to connect premed and medical students, residents, fellows, faculty, and researchers and support their career endeavors. The members of this group are expected to establish a network for exploring venues in career guidance and research opportunities including remote options for maximizing the benefits.
College students in premed programs may enroll as mentees. Students in undergraduate medical education (DO or MD program) can enroll as mentors if they just want to serve as mentors to premed students and medical students in their early careers. They can enroll as mentees if they also want to be mentored by senior medical students, Residents, Fellows and Faculty while they mentor premed students. Residents, Fellows and faculty should register as mentors. All members will have the ability to invite their peers and contacts to join the group to expand the network.

The NIH Diversity Program Consortium is looking to feature NRMN mentors and mentees in its third annual #FaceOfScience social media campaign on Wednesday, April 26! This national social media campaign brings together the scientific research training community for one day to celebrate being a scientist. Join trainees and researchers from other NIH programs like RISE, MARC, Bridges, and more.
You can participate directly on April 26. Simply:
- Write “#FaceOfScience” on a piece of paper
- Take a photo of yourself holding it
- Post it to Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter using the hashtag #FaceOfScience and tag @enhancescience. Tell them what you love most about being a scientist in your post.

Plus, the Texas Center for Health Disparities invites researchers and community organizations to present their work at the conference. To be considered, you'll need to submit an abstract. The abstract submission form is divided into two tracks: Scientific Research and Community Programs. You will be able to select your track and proceed with the submission accordingly. Accepted presenters will be asked to present a poster to be showcased during the conference. Abstracts will be housed in an online portal and will be available to view throughout the conference. Three posters will be awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd place toward the end of day. The last day to submit an abstract is May 26.
