New Hometown Hero Banners Displayed in Culpeper Downtown

Culpeper Renaissance, Inc. (CRI) is excited to announce the installation of the New Hometown Hero banners honoring the remarkable individuals submitted by our community members. This year, the program has doubled in size, allowing CRI to proudly display 148 local heroes throughout Culpeper downtown.

This heartfelt program allows our community to come together and recognize the extraordinary contributions made by our hometown heroes. Each banner is a tribute to those who have made a significant impact in our lives and serves as a reminder of the values we cherish in our community.

Audrey Curtis, Chair of the CRI Design Committee, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “The Hometown Hero Banner program is a beautiful way to honor those who have selflessly served our community. It’s heartwarming to see the program grow, bringing us together in gratitude and celebration of our local heroes.”

Jessica Jenkins, CRI Executive Director, added, “We are incredibly proud to showcase the stories of our heroes. With 148 heroes displayed this year, this initiative embodies the spirit of Culpeper and reminds us all of the strength and resilience of our community. A huge thank you to the Town of Culpeper Public Works for their hard work and dedication in placing the banners.”

The Hometown Hero banners will be displayed from May to mid-July for Memorial Day and again from October to mid-November in celebration of Veterans Day, allowing residents and visitors to explore downtown while searching for their loved ones' banners.

Culpeper Renaissance, Inc. Unveils New Mural “We Will Remember Them”

by Local Artist Natalie Hefner

Culpeper Renaissance, Inc. (CRI) is proud to announce the unveiling of a new mural titled “We Will Remember Them,” located on West Davis Street. This powerful artwork serves as a tribute to those who have served, those we have lost, and those who continue to carry their memory.

The mural prominently features a striking black-and-white poppy design, enhanced by vibrant pops of red that create a dramatic contrast. This bold use of color transforms the delicate poppy into a powerful symbol of remembrance, emphasizing the mural's significance in honoring lives lost in war. The poppy has long been associated with resilience and gratitude, particularly following the First World War when it flourished across the battlefields of Flanders.

Audrey Curtis, Chair of the Design Committee, stated “Art has the power to connect us to our shared experiences and histories. ‘We Will Remember Them’ not only beautifies our community but also honors the sacrifices of those who have served. This mural stands as a reminder that we remember, we honor, and we hold close the memories of those who gave so much.”

Jessica Jenkins, Executive Director of Culpeper Renaissance, added “The importance of arts in our community cannot be overstated. This mural serves as a visible reminder of gratitude towards our first responders and military personnel. It’s a space for reflection, healing, and appreciation, emphasizing our commitment to honoring those who serve and the families who support them.”

Artist Natalie Hefner shared her personal connection to the project “This piece carries immense significance for me. This artwork is about remembrance and the shared experience of grief. As part of a first responder family, I have learned to balance the weight of responsibility while finding the strength to support others even during life's most challenging moments. The choice of a black-and-white palette, accented by striking red poppies, mirrors this balance of dark and light times. The subtle “Thank You” positioned high on the mural faces heavenward as a quiet expression of gratitude to those we have known and lost, honoring lives that touched our community and were taken too soon. For firefighters who pass nearby, it also serves as a reminder that their service, sacrifice, and dedication are seen, valued, and appreciated. Creating this mural has also provided me with a calm space to process my own grief, specifically in memory of someone dear to me who passed away. It honors those we have lost while recognizing the loved ones who carry their memory forward and it is my hope for people to find comfort in community and through shared remembrance.”

Located near the Culpeper County Fire Department and War Memorials located at the courthouse courtyard, “We Will Remember Them” deepens its meaning by broadening its tribute to those whose service is honored there. The mural serves as a source of comfort, appreciation, and a call to remembrance for all who engage with it.

Culpeper Renaissance, Inc. invites the community to visit the mural and reflect on the lives and sacrifices it honors. This initiative is part of our ongoing efforts to integrate art into our community, fostering a deeper connection among residents and honoring those who have served.

CRI, Culpeper’s designated Main Street organization, is transforming our community through art, culture, and connection.
