A Note From Debbie...

ADA 34 Logo in Red and Blue Text

In honor of the 34th anniversary of the signing of the ADA, we hosted a bowling Supper Social Club event during the month of July. This was the first time we hosted a bowling event and it was FANTASTIC! There were 55 people at the event. Everyone had a great time bowling and eating pizza.

We also held our first silent raffle. We received raffle prizes from Milam’s Markets, BarkBox, Chipotle, and Grou Coffee & Cowork. The event was held at Bird Bowl and Susie was amazing and made sure that every detail was taken care of.

Thank you to our fabulous volunteers Chris and Soul and to Danielle from the Children’s Trust for connecting us with these YAC members.

Thank you to Bonnie for helping with the event and for donating items to our silent raffle.

Thank you to our summer intern Celeste, she was so helpful with the planning of the event and on the day of the event. She took orders, delivered drinks, helped with the registration, and with all the small details throughout the event.

Thank you to Justine for your amazing job planning the event, checking everyone in, taking pictures, and posting on our Social Media platforms.

And a special thank you to everyone that supported the event and bowled with us. I loved every minute of the event and had a great time.

And a final thanks to our Board President, Matthew Dietz. Thank you for being in charge of collecting the money, picking the silent raffle winners, and carrying all of the supplies. You are the best!!!!

Our next Supper Social Club event will be on August 26, 2024, at 6:30 pm. Please join us! You can find the details below in our newsletter.

The 34th Anniversary of the

Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

By: Celeste Mazloum

This month marks the 34th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), signed into law on July 26, 1990. The bill was first introduced to Congress in April 1988, and over two years, it went through several drafts, revisions, negotiations, and amendments before it was finalized in 1990. However, it is important to note that this call for advocacy didn't just drop from the sky. It was accompanied by the decade-long "Disability Rights Movement," which developed momentum and respect for the disabled community. In effect, members of Congress increasingly began to use their voices to speak up for the civil rights of the disabled community. 1988 also happened to be a presidential election year, and Vice President Bush made a campaign promise that if elected, he would arrange a bill that integrated people with disabilities into the mainstream of American life. On July 26, 1990, President George H.W. Bush kept his promise by signing the ADA into action. READ MORE HERE
