RANGER CHECKPOINT

June 2025

A Message from the Chairman

Rangers and Family Members,

We hope that you all enjoyed a peaceful Memorial Day and were able to take a moment to reflect on the real meaning of the day.

It wasn't a day about cookouts, boat rides and fireworks – but rather a time to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice, who laid down their lives for our great nation. I always struggle when someone tells me "Happy Memorial Day," but then I remember, it’s not out of malice, they just don’t understand because they likely have not served like many of us.

It was great to see so many of you at SOF Week in Tampa earlier in May, and soon Hall of Fame Week will be upon us. As you make your way back to Columbus and Fort Benning, please take the time to stop by and see YOUR Ranger Memorial. We’ve been hard at work making improvements to include adding the new QR code stone locator to make it easier to find your or your loved one's stone.

We hope you all have a great summer and that you are able to reunite with your fellow Rangers to reminisce and enjoy some fellowship. I look forward to seeing you all at some of the future events in our Ranger community.

RLTW!

Story Behind the Stone

Ranger William D. Walsh, Jr. (Section D, Column 11)

On Friday, May 2, 2025, our office received a remarkable message from James Leaney, a resident of Rodmell, England, located approximately four miles inland from Newhaven port in East Sussex. While tending his garden, Mr. Leaney discovered a World War II-era American dog tag inscribed with the name William D. Walsh, Jr. Curious about its origins, he reached out to the National Ranger Memorial Foundation for information.

Our research confirmed that the dog tag belonged to Ranger William D. Walsh, Jr., a Technician Fifth Grade who served with Company F, 2nd Ranger Battalion from 1942 to 1945. This extraordinary find, now 81 years old, connects directly to the storied history of the 2nd Rangers, who played a critical role in the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944. Mr. Leaney believes the battalion was likely staged in the Rodmell area, near Newhaven or other coastal ports, as they prepared for their mission to scale the cliffs of Pointe du Hoc and support the invasion of Normandy.

The dog tag, a tangible link to Ranger Walsh’s service, underscores the enduring legacy of the soldiers who trained and fought from England’s shores. A photograph of Ranger Walsh's tag below tag serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made. We are grateful to Mr. Leaney for sharing this piece of history, which continues to honor the bravery of the 2nd Ranger Battalion.

From Around Our Ranger & Army Communities:

Earlier in May, the Hardrock Charlie Foundation gathered in St. Augustine, FL for its annual summit. Rangers, families, and friends gathered, reminisced, ate, and jumped! The Round Canopy Parachute Team and Skydive Palatka hosted this year's jump from the WWII C-47 Tico Belle. Keep up with the organization's events and learn more about its mission at Hardrock Charlie Foundation.

On May 23rd, members of the Sons of Mosby Motorcycle Association rode to Warrenton, VA where they visited the grave of John S. Mosby.
