RANGER CHECKPOINT

January 2025

Editor: Molly Stringham

A Message from the Chairman:

Fellow Rangers –

We hope you all had a very joyous holiday season. We, at the Foundation, wish all of our supporters a very happy and prosperous 2025.

As we start the new year, know that your Foundation is hard at work maintaining our memorial and honoring the legacy of our Rangers and their families. In that vein, we want to remind all of you that we are accepting scholarship applications through April 30, 2025. Last year we awarded $44,000 in scholarships to Rangers or their family members. Applications for this year can be submitted online at National Ranger Memorial Foundation Scholarship.

Your Foundation will have members in attendance at the 10th Annual Black and Tan event on January 22, 2025, in Las Vegas. We’ll also be present at Shot Show, so look for us there!

Lastly, we look forward to seeing all of you at Fort Moore, April 11-13, 2025, for the 41st Annual David E. Grange Best Ranger Competition, a great opportunity to gather and celebrate our community.

Last month the U.S. Army Ranger Association purchased a stone at the Monument in honor of WWII Ranger Ralph E. Goranson. CPT Goranson was the Commanding Officer of Company C, 2nd Ranger Infantry Battalion and landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day at "H" hour with the initial assault wave during World War II. He received the Distinguished Service Cross for valor and the Purple Heart. We are forever indebted to Ranger Goranson's sacrifice and are honored to play a small part in preserving his legacy.

Last November, Foundation Director Max Mullen attended the 54th anniversary commemoration of the Son Tay raid, which was held at Camp Bull Simons at Eglin AFB. Veterans of the momentous historical event and Vietnam POWs gathered with a group of 7th SFG members and other guests to share their stories and answer questions. The Son Tay Raid was a joint operation between the U.S. Air Force and Army to rescue American POWs from a camp in North Vietnam in 1970. Thanks to these extraordinary men for their valiant actions. Our mission at the National Ranger Memorial Foundation is clear – to honor and support Rangers and their families. Through the establishment and preservation of the National Ranger Monument, we aim to provide a tangible testament to the Rangers’ sacrifices and contributions. And our commitment extends beyond the monument itself; we strive to support Rangers and their families in other ways, including scholarships and other support initiatives. It is through this mission that we hope to preserve the legacy of our Nation’s Rangers, ensuring their bravery and dedication are not forgotten.
