What Does It Mean To Eat Clean?
I was fixing some toast with bread I purchased at the market the other day and the first bite was heaven! The bread was sweet, moist and perfectly toasted. I knew I was eating "clean" bread whose shelf life was not extended by additives.
Sometimes my job as the official taste tester of the Frisco Rotary Farmers Market can be really hard!
According to the Mayo Clinic, eating clean generally means prioritizing whole, minimally processed foods that are as close to their natural state as possible. While there is no official scientific or regulatory definition, the core philosophy focuses on nourishing your body with "real food" while reducing the intake of highly processed items, artificial additives, and refined sugars.
All of our vendors at the market are committed to growing and creating fresh, additive free, organic products. Sometimes we can't help but make them sweet, but we're always committed to making them as close to their natural state as possible.
Want to learn more about the food you buy? Check out the Yuka app. It's a free app that you can use to read the bar codes on food labels to see the food's nutritional make-up including sugar, salt and additives. When my husband and I got the app we were like kids in a candy store...reading all the barcodes throughout the store. Be ready to be shocked...we have yet to find any prepared meatballs, condiments, salad dressings, etc. that rank higher than "poor". And the high risk additives that are in even the most benign foods are scary!
Meanwhile, know that the foods you buy from the Frisco Rotary Farmers at Kaleidoscope Park fresh and additive free.
