Howdy!
Spring is almost here, and the weather has been beautiful. I hope that all of you have had some time to spend with friends and loved ones, and I am looking forward to seeing all of you at our upcoming events! Our next District 10 community meeting is on Monday, March 21st at 7 pm at the Tool Yard, located at 10303 Tool Yard. We will be joined by Well Med and United Health Care, SAPD’s North SAFFE Unit, and the Texas Department of Transportation.
Also, please join us to celebrate our District 10 Fiesta event on Tuesday, March 22nd at 5:30 pm, located at the outdoor pavilion of the Catholic Life Insurance Bldg at 1635 NE Loop 410. We are partnering with Representative Steve Allison and Bexar County Commissioner Marialyn Barnard to host this community favorite event which will be filled with fun appearances, live music, and delicious food for our guests. Come join us!
We have some important issues on the horizon, namely the proposed 2022 bond, redistricting, and the start of the FY 23 annual budget process that I hope all of you will weigh in on. The next step for the 2022 bond is an election in May, and redistricting is ongoing through the summer. We have two redistricting meetings that will occur in District 10, one on April 23rd at the Tool Yard starting at 10 am, and the other at the NE Senior Center on May 2nd at 6 pm. All of the meetings (even past meetings) are available on the City of San Antonio’s YouTube City of San Antonio. Finally, we are kicking off the FY 23 budget discussions with a Council goal-setting meeting in April, but please send in your priorities and let me know what you’d like to see us focus on with your tax dollars!

Naomi E. Miller named Executive Director of American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC SA)
The Officers and Board members of the San Antonio chapter of the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) are pleased to announce that Naomi E. Miller has been named the new Executive Director of ACEC SA and will assume the position currently held by Anne Whittington, who has served in that position since 2004.
Ms. Miller, currently Director of Governmental Relations for Northside Independent School District (NISD), will assume the leadership position effective March 14, 2022. She brings an extensive background in advocacy, government relations, public policy, strategic planning, political campaigns, and administration to the position. Prior to joining NISD, Ms. Miller was District Director for the Texas House of Representatives, Office of Speaker Joe Straus. She served on the Texans for Joe Straus Campaign Staff as well. Ms. Miller also served as Senior Administrative Support Associate, Government & Industry Relations at USAA for eight (8) years, working for former Bexar County Judge Cyndi Taylor Krier. Prior to her years at USAA, she served on Judge Krier’s staff at Bexar County Commissioners Court.
Active in numerous business-related organizations and committees as well as Leadership programs, Ms. Miller is a Cum Laude graduate of the University of the Incarnate Word and an Honors graduate of McCollum High School.
ACEC SA, with over 90 member firms representing several thousand employees, is the area chapter of a national and state organization whose goals are to advance the business practices of consulting engineering firms of all different sizes and disciplines. ACEC is a champion of infrastructure and works closely with public partners as well as elected and non-elected officials to promote and provide communities with safe and sustainable infrastructure.
“We’ve come a long way since ACEC SA was founded. In 2004 we had 17 member firms. We now represent most of the area firms and are currently supporting a historic $1.2 Billion City of San Antonio Bond program,” noted Derek Naiser, P.E., current Chairman of ACEC Texas and a former ACEC SA chair. We’ve strived to strategically increase our presence in our community and plan to continue to grow our relationships with our partners. We are very pleased to have Naomi take the helm as we move forward,” he continued.

Commission on Strengthening Family Well-Being - The Board is comprised of eleven (11) members each with a two-year term of office concurrent with the term of the appointing City Councilmember. The SA2020 Commission on Strengthening Family Well-Being works in concert with stakeholders, SA2020, and the Department of Human Services to help meet the family well-being and safety net goals, indicators, and measures identified during the SA2020 process. The Commission serves in an advisory capacity to the Department of Human Services and the City Council on matters affecting the well-being of San Antonio residents and families. The meetings are held every other month at the Willie C. Velasquez Center located at 1302 N. Zarzamora St., San Antonio, Texas, 78205. SA: Ready to Work is a San Antonio education and job placement program funded by a 1/8-cent sales and use tax collected through December 2025. The $200M program offers unemployed, underemployed, and under-represented residents the following benefits:
- Tuition for industry-recognized certifications, associate’s and bachelor’s degrees aligned with targeted occupations in high-demand, well-paid careers;
- Wraparound support services and emergency assistance to ensure training completion; and
- Job placement and retention services.
The Board is comprised of 11 (eleven) members:
- 4 (four) representatives from local employers offering in-demand occupations;
- 2 (two) current or previous City workforce program participants;
- 1 (one) representative from a trade and labor organization; 1 (one) representative from a community organization;
- 1 (one) representative from a training provider or higher education institution; and
- 2 (two) liaisons/representatives appointed by the Mayor.
The Board has created two Subcommittees, relating to Employer Engagement and Community Outreach and Marketing.
The deadline to submit an application is March 25, 2022.

The Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) - is seeking applications for two at-large member vacancies on the 15-member committee. At-large members can serve up to three two-year terms for a total of no more than six years.
The purpose of the CAC is to provide input to us on our business activities. The CAC acts as an interface between us and our customers; they seek to understand performance measures and challenge us to “think outside the box.” The CAC is one of several methods of enhancing communication between CPS Energy and its customers.
At-large members must reside within the boundaries of our service area. Any person can nominate an at-large member and you have the responsibility of approving all appointments to the CAC.
We will advertise the search for applicants through several media channels until the application deadline of Friday, March 18 and all interested candidates must submit their application online at https://www.cpsenergy.com/cac.

This event, April 1st from 10 AM – 11:30 AM on the courthouse steps, as you may know, will honor the children who have paid the ultimate price for abuse, and reaffirm the community’s commitment to stopping Child Abuse.

San Antonio Parks & Recreation and San Antonio Food Bank Partner Together |

San Antonio Parks and Recreation and San Antonio Food Bank are partnering to support food security efforts at the upcoming Jammin’ Jams fruit and nut tree adoption events happening on March 5 at Texas A&M University-SA and on March 26 at Wheatley Heights Sports Complex. In addition to taking home a free fruit or nut tree, tree adoption participants will have the opportunity to take home a produce bag provided by the San Antonio Food Bank.
“Tree adoption events are designed to promote food security and enhance canopy coverage while diversifying and beautifying our community,” said Homer Garcia III, Director of Parks and Recreation. “We’re excited to partner with the San Antonio Food Bank to offer produce bags during Jammin’ Jams. It’s a perfect complement to our combined food security outreach efforts.” San Antonio Parks and Recreation recently provided a variety of 59 fruit and nut trees to the Padre Park Community Food Forest initiative.
“We love our parks and this opportunity to partner around the tree giveaway is perfect as we turn toward Spring. Adding on fresh produce for families feeling the pinch at the grocery store is just the right thing to do,” said Eric S. Cooper, President & CEO of the San Antonio Food Bank.
Six hundred (600) fruit and nut trees will be available at each event. One tree will be available per car for drive-thru events. The events are from 8 a.m. until Noon or while supplies last. A variety of fruit and nut tree species will be available for adoption at each event. Quantities are limited and are first-come, first-serve. Produce bags will be available to tree adoption participants and are optional.
Two Jammin’ Jams tree adoption events remain for the season:
- March 5 – Texas A&M University-SA (One University Way/Parking Lot B) – Drive-Thru*
- March 26 – Wheatley Heights Sports Complex (200 Noblewood Dr) – Drive-Thru*
*For traffic safety, drive-thru events cannot accommodate walk-ups.
Recently completed Jammin’ Jam tree adoptions, a drive-thru, and a walk-up event provided a total of 1200 fruit and nut trees to the community. These events were at Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium and Monterrey Park.
Health & Safety Protocols
For drive-thru events, participants will remain inside their cars and are encouraged to wear a mask when interacting with staff and volunteers.

26th Annual Cesar Chavez March for Justice |
|
The 26th annual Cesar Chavez March for Justice is scheduled for March 26, 2022. The event has been postponed for the last two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"This year's March is especially important as we prepare to celebrate the ... first Cesar Chavez Day in San Antonio later this month," said Mayor Nirenberg.
City Council voted to observe Cesar Chavez's birthday, March 31, as a paid city holiday.
"San Antonio is the 7th largest city in the country and the second-largest city in Texas with a majority Latino community, so recognizing March 31 as an official City holiday not only honors the lifelong work of a great Latino leader but also honors the importance of culture and history of so many of our ... residents and families," he added.
Thousands of San Antonians will walk in honor of Cesar Chavez's legacy. Participants are encouraged to donate canned goods to the march to aid the "Yes we CAN" food drive. All canned goods will go to the San Antonio Food Bank. All donations can be dropped off at the beginning of the march route.
"The Pandemic has made it challenging for our community to gather together," said Ernest J. Martinez, chairman of CECLEF. "But it has also made us stronger because we've united to lift each other up and create new ... to remind people that although La Causa began nearly 50 years ago, the issues today are similar to those faced in the civil rights movement in the '60s and '70s.
The March for Justice will culminate with a festival of music, food, and a speech by CELEF chair Ernest J. Martinez and the First Lady of San Antonio, Erika Prosper Nirenberg.
Cesar Chavez Day is March 31 and residents can continue their celebrations at the San Fernando Ballroom. Entertainment will be provided and starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $31 and all proceeds go toward student scholarships.
