The LOHM Calls on Biden Administration to End Lifelong Restitution

In partnership with REFORM Alliance, The Ladies of Hope Ministries (The LOHM) launched the #RemissionNow Campaign. Through #RemissionNow The LOHM is seeking reformative justice regarding restitution and is calling on the Biden Administration to end the life-long sentence that restitution imposes on formerly incarcerated women.

The campaign kicked off in Washington D.C. with The LOHM Founder and CEO Dr. Topeka K. Sam, REFORM Alliance, and 27 women - all of whom have been affected by restitution. All 27 women's clemency applications were submitted to the U.S. Pardon Attorney’s Office in hopes of jumpstarting the movement to end restitution. Following the petition submissions, a Lunch and Learn panel was then held at the Eaton DC where a number of impacted women shared their stories and called for action.

#REMISSIONNOW

The remission of these egregious fines is a step toward racial, gender, and social justice. Through #RemissionNow, we hope to remedy the burden that restitution has imposed. Click the link below to sign the petition and join us in the fight to end lifelong restitution.

The women shared the hardships that restitution has imposed on them including their inability to purchase homes, cars, and insurance and the barriers they face when trying to obtain bank accounts and credit cards. The women expounded on how these barriers to reentry cause detrimental financial and psychological effects to them and their families.

Hope House Opening in

PGC County Maryland

The LOHM is excited to announce the opening of our fourth Hope House in Prince George’s County, MD. Hope House was founded in 2017 by Dr. Topeka K. Sam and is The LOHM’s independent living space designed to provide a holistic environment of support services, guidance, and safe housing for women impacted by incarceration and trauma.

Hope House has been dedicated to helping women find meaningful employment, educational opportunities, daily reunification, and healing through trauma-informed care services. The programs offered to residents of Hope House include career mentorship, tutoring, training for public speaking, writing legislation, and certified doula training. In addition to these programs, there is also a focus on basic needs such as homeless and food insecurity. Hope House PGC will open its doors later this year!

FACES OF WOMEN IMPRISONED

FALL 2022 GRADUATION

We hope you will join us as we celebrate the Faces of Women Imprisoned (FOWI) 2022 graduates! The women in the FOWI '22 Angel Faces cohort have transformed into powerful advocates who leverage their lived experiences to change the narrative of incarceration.

Publicly sharing traumatic stories is not easy, but these women are catalysts for justice, dedicated to deepening public conversation about the criminal legal system.

The graduates have harnessed their advocacy power and created an unbreakable sisterhood. We are proud of them for prioritizing their professional growth and healing during the speaker's bureau training.

Join us in uplifting their narratives on Friday, September 9, 2022, at 11 AM EST.

Tune in live on The Ladies of Hope Ministries Facebook as the graduates share stories about the impact of the criminal legal system and reflect on their time in the FOWI program.

The LOHM in partnership with Common Sense Childbirth Inc. is launching its fourth cohort of trained doulas. The Doula Initiative is the first installment of our EPIC REPRO+Justice program, which focuses on improving maternal health outcomes and building pathways to economic empowerment for women and non-binary individuals who are impacted by the criminal legal system.

Participants will be provided with the skills necessary to offer peer support along the perinatal continuum and establish, operate and market a successful doula business.

The virtual doula training program focused on reproductive justice and birth equity will prepare participants to be trauma-informed doulas, equipped to work in traditional birthing environments as well as prisons and jails.

Applications are due by September 23, 2022. Fall classes start October 3, 2022
