Honoring America's Work Force

— HOLIDAY HISTORY —

Contrary to its name, Labor Day is not a work day. For many, it is just the opposite—a day off from work, school, etc. It has been established as a day of recognition for the contributions that working people have made to society.

Labor Day is always the first Monday of September. That date has no traditional significance, other than maybe it comes halfway between Independence Day and Thanksgiving.

For many years, proponents had sought for a special honoring of the American worker. But it wasn't considered until Peter J. McGuire, president of the Carpenters Brotherhood, made an eloquent appeal in 1882 before the Central Labor Union of New York. Later that year—on Tuesday, Sept. 5—a Labor Day Parade happened in New York City. Turnout was overwhelming.

Making it a national holiday was proposed in 1884 by the Federation of Organized Trades & Labor Unions, but Congress did nothing. So, several states started doing their own thing, with Oregon the first state to make it a legal holiday in 1887. After 30 states had done their own celebrations, Congress passed a bill in 1894, and President Grover Cleveland signed it into law.

The spiritual significance of Labor Day? The Bible states several times that the Lord rewards a diligent worker.

NOTE: The church office is closed today (Labor Day) in honor of all hard workers.

A Day of Appreciation

More than 70 workers in Riverbend's Children's Ministry participated in the recent Kids Volunteer Appreciation Lunch in Fellowship Hall. Thanks to Children's Director Hope Hargrave (organizer of the event), her support team and Pastors Aaron Johnsen (pictured above) and Josh Brown for their support.
