Scammers on the Prowl!

The best scams (illegal schemes to take your money, personal info or property) sometimes seem so real. They are designed and used by professional crooks who have fooled even the most alert, well-trained citizens. Learn how to recognize helpful warning signs that come from law enforcement, banks, insurance companies, credit firms, security companies, etc:

1. Scammers want you to panic.
2. Scammers want you to trust them as they pretend to be a government agency, a charity, a retail company, your church or one of your financial firms.
3. Scammers usually start with small requests, then gradually ask for more.

THREE EXAMPLES:

Bank Alert Scam

• You see or hear something like this: "Fraud alert. Did you make a $499 purchase? Verify immediately."
• Your thought: "I need to stop this purchase before it goes any further."
• Pause if you notice that the communication to you creates fear or urgency, wants you to click or call now, comes from an unexpected number.

Payment Due Scam

• You see or hear something like this: "You have an unpaid toll. Pay within 24 hours."
• Your thought: "I better pay before I get a penalty."
• Pause if you notice you weren't expecting a bill, the link (or email) doesn't match the organization, you're pressured to pay immediately.

'Wrong Name' or 'Wrong Number' Scam

• You see or hear something like this: "Hi, is this John?
• Your thought: "They're contacting the wrong person."
• Pause if you notice they keep the keep the conversation going, they become unusually friendly, they start talking about easy money or investments.

Stay ahead of scammers:

1. Be cautions ... Always be on the alert when someone asks for info or money.
2. Take your time ... Anyone that wants to rush you is probably not legit.
3. Trust only verified sources ... Double-check them: see if company is real, or get advice from someone you trust.
4. Protect your info ... Never share personal or financial details unless you've confirmed from another source who you're dealing with.

Never will Riverbend Church, nor any of its staff, ever ask you—via text or e-mail—for money, gift cards or special donations. If you have questions, and before responding to any such request that is supposedly from the church, phone the person who supposedly sent it or phone the church office (386-672-1821).
