MOTHER'S DAY HISTORY

A Non-Mother Is Responsible

Mothers have always been considered "special," even before Mother's Day became a legal holiday in the U.S. in 1914. Throughout the Bible, a child's mother is his/her most priceless gift from God. Since the Bible commands and exemplifies "honoring and caring for your mother," it's only natural that a special day be set aside for that purpose.

But the celebration of Mother's Day was a long time coming in the USA. Credit for its origination goes to Anna Jarvis, who was born May 1, 1864, in West Virginia as the daughter of a Methodist minister.

Anna had heard her mother say several times there should be a holiday honoring mothers. She grew up but never married, instead spending her life caring for her blind sister Eleanor. When her mother died in 1905, Anna—never a mother—felt the loss greatly. Two years later, on the second Sunday in May 1907, Anna invited many friends over to discuss the idea of promoting an annual Mother's Day. Thanks to the influence of some cooperating ministers and other leaders, the idea spread quickly.

Seven years later, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as an annual day honoring mothers.

====================

This Thursday, May 7

  • An annual observance on the first Thursday of May each year.
  • A reminder for Americans to pray for the USA.
  • Formally established by Congress in 1952 after a prayer crusade led by evangelist Billy Graham.
  • Set on its current date in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan.
  • Stems from a long tradition of days of fasting and prayer, beginning with the Continental Congress urging prayer for the American colonies in 1775.
  • U.S. President each year is required, by law, to issue an annual proclamation urging prayer.
  • Liberals have sought to cancel the law (on the basis of "separation of church & state"), but federal courts have consistently upheld its observance.
  • Riverbend regularly requests members to pray for our nation and our church.
