Dear Indio Neighbors:
Our City of Indio team continues to move forward on our aggressive capital improvement plans. I know it creates mobility challenges for everyone, but the Highway 111 road reconstruction project is moving forward as quickly as possible. Most of this work will be done before Thanksgiving. We are also proceeding quickly on the Madison widening project from Avenue 50 to Avenue 52. The most encouraging news this last month is the award of approximately $6 million in local street rehab and overlay. The locations of these projects can be seen on the City website at
Citywide Roadway Rehab Project
. This work is long overdue, and is largely made possible from the Measure X sales tax initiative that voters approved in 2016.
Private development continues to occur as well. The former Toys "R" Us space at the Indio Towne Center is being re-leased by a new Burlington retail store and Marshall's is being built next door. The back side of the former Super Target store on Jackson Street at the Showcase at Indio will house the corporate headquarters of a new company along with light manufacturing. The front part of the building is being redone for tenancies for future retail stores.
Across the street from this site, the new Fairfield Inn & Suites is due to open in about a month. And ground-breaking is scheduled for a new Hampton Inn later this week, located near the WalMart off Spectrum Street.
In the last couple of weeks, the City was delighted to be recognized by WalletHub as one of the 30 fastest growing cities in America, and 8
th
fastest in California and 3
rd
fastest in Southern California behind only Irvine and Santa Clarita. Obviously we don’t just want to grow, we want to grow wisely. The City Council will be spending a large amount of time the next 3 months focusing on adoption of the new General Plan and Downtown Specific Plan precisely because “growing smart” is the key. We seek good growth, attracting wealth-producing businesses, new jobs, and community amenities.
Mayor Michael Wilson will be addressing these and other sentiments in his State of the City presentation at Fantasy Springs at a luncheon on October 26. The public is welcome to make reservations for this event at
events@gcvcc.org
. The presentation will be videotaped and made available on the City website following the event.
Sincerely,
Mark Scott
City Manager

Fastest Growing City in America for 2018
Personal finance website WalletHub has just released its 2018 rankings for the Fastest Growing Cities in America and the City of Indio makes the Top 30 list. WalletHub applies 15 relevant metrics to evaluate cities across the nation including growth in population, jobs, income, business startups, and building permit activity. “I’m thrilled to see Indio ranked in WalletHub’s Top 30 Fastest Growing Cities in America, but I am not surprised. We have been seeing families moving to Indio and businesses starting here since the Great Recession. I expect to see us move up that list in the future,” said Indio Mayor Michael Wilson. “The real estate and building industries all know Indio is booming and they have the data supporting this. It’s the reason why we have so many housing starts and filled up empty big box stores so quickly.”

Often Women have had to fight or go against the social norms of the day to dream the impossible, and, through their grit, they have made extraordinary things happen. This exhibit is devoted to the women who have braved the heat and dust in the forlorn desert outpost of the Coachella Valley region of California right up to the women of today who continue to brave the unknown in their pursuit of a better life for all who live here. These are the women who work hard to do good things. These are the women we honor. Exhibit now open through December 2018 in the Smiley-Tyler House. I
ndio Teen Center (ITC) Turns 10
The Indio Teen Center celebrated its 10 Year Anniversary on September 6th. Since 2008, the ITC has seen countless teens pass through its doors and participate in its various educational and recreational programs. Many of our teens have gone away to college or trade schools and graduated; now working as barbers, teachers, mechanics, even an architect. While some move outside of the Coachella Valley, others never left Indio; yet they always return to the Indio Teen Center to visit and keep us updated on life after the ITC. Teens were treated to a taco cart with unlimited tacos, snow cones, and water games; music entertainment was provided by Friday Night Live. Five lucky ITC Members won Beats headphones courtesy of Goldenvoice in a raffle and the coveted ITC Teen of the Year award went to Tania Valdez-Lopez.

City of Indio Scheduled Maintenance and Road Closures
The City of Indio is embarking on another major roadway improvement project to slurry seal and resurface city streets. Indio City Council approved a contract with Matich Corporation in an amount of $6,077,500 for the Citywide Roadway Rehab project. In order to increase the lifespan of the City’s street infrastructure, preventative maintenance is necessary. In order to bring these roads back up to community standards, the City has identified the use of an asphalt pavement grind and overlay treatment as the most cost effective method, repairing 11 residential and 3 commercial industrial neighborhood roadways, as well as several high profile secondary roads. The Project will begin in November 2018 and end in January 2019 with additional work in the Spring. Want to know more?
