FROM SAILING SCUTTLEBUTT ON TUESDAY, DECEMBER 7TH:
Thankfully, all sailors from Charlotte Jane III are safe aboard Magic Dragon. It’s all too easy to overlook steering maintenance, as frayed steering cables and rusted chains are conveniently hidden out of sight, but this abandonment highlights the necessity of regular steering system inspection and maintenance.
Edson recommends inspection of all steering system components annually and before any significant passage. We also recommend the replacement of the chain and wire assembly every 7 to 10 years, more frequently if there has been significant Caribbean navigation.
Steering is the difference between a vessel and a shelter, and regular care can make sure your steering is passage-ready.
