FROM THE BILGE
by Paul Kaplan

Historically, a boatyard is probably the last place that comes to mind when you think of the word "clean." However, it is very clear that in the State of California and beyond, boatyards of the future are destined to no longer hold last place.
For better or worse, slowly the outdated and non-compliant boatyards have been closing.  Smaller coastal harbors that once boasted several boatyards, such as Half Moon Bay and Bodega Bay, today have none. Whether these closures are a consequence of a reduced fishery, ever increasing land values or the enormous challenges that come with operating a business in California, the impacts are undeniable and there is no sign of reversal. FAIR WINDS AND A FOND FAREWELL

We saw the end of an era here at KKMI this holiday season. After decades as the skipper of our store, Ralf is making his retirement official. Ralf is now on a course toward enjoying the simpler joys of retired life. However, he will not likely be gathering any moss as he's still very active in the Alerion fleet while he's not off searching for fresh powder on the slopes.

We have benefited greatly from his expertise and knowledge and are very thankful he was a part of the KKMI family.

His shoes are thankfully, competently being filled by our new store and purchasing director, Dave Kendig.

We are looking for a few more good people. We need a few "Jacks of All (Boat) Trades" and we are also looking for a Carpenter/Shipwright.

KKMI SIGHTINGS

Have you ever opened a fortune cookie and inserted " . . . between the sheets"? We often wonder what that would be like with boat names. Here are two that would work particularly well with that game.
