This past semester, seven MEC companies - Colvin Run Networks (MEC-Leesburg), DataLock Consulting Group, KaDSci, LLC, Webworld Technologies, Harmony Tech, Venio Systems Inc., and Itinfra, along with three local cyber startups, NowSecure, Onclave and Cyberstanc - agreed to host Mason students, their stipend paid for by the University, to work on their projects. Thanks to this experience, 15 George Mason students experienced working in a startup and may decide to launch their own startups in the future.
Recognizing that startups and small businesses are an important and growing part of the Virginia cybersecurity ecosystem, the program focuses on two objectives: to provide cybersecurity students from diverse backgrounds with relevant, hands-on experiential learning opportunities, and to provide cybersecurity startups and small businesses with the talent they need to scale their businesses. This joint project with Marymount University seeks to diversify the cybersecurity talent pipeline and build a resilient and diverse cybersecurity innovation ecosystem that will help Northern Virginia thrive, post-pandemic.
Thanks to the success of the pilot with George Mason University and Marymount University, a new grant has been approved for 55 interns (40 from GMU,15 from Marymount) to participate in a new Commonwealth Cyber Initiative Program in the coming academic year. Recruiting for students and companies is starting now over the summer for a Fall start. Read more here.

Freelancers and Independent Contractors Under Virginia Law - FAQs
Do the laws apply retroactively, before July 1, 2020?
No. The July 1, 2020 statues relate to the use of the Virginia court system for employees who think they are misclassified as independent contractors. It appears that s hiring company found to have wrongly classified an individual that way would be responsible for back taxes and benefits back to that effective date. The next batch of statutes that take effect on January 1, 2021 also do not apply retroactively to before that date. Those statutes allow the Virginia Department of Taxation to fine companies for misclassification beginning that date.
